Default Dark Seed

I found this game and I realized that years and years ago, when I first saw it on the shelves of the shop center, I really wanted to play it. However, I've heard very different thoughts and I can't find a review here on AGs. Is the game any good?

It's a very long time ago but I seem to remember that it was good for its time (1992/1993) !

IIRC, DarkSeed2 (1995) was even better.
N.B. I uploaded a walkthrough for DarkSeed2 in 2000 (still available) since it has some tricky moments/puzzles !!

Quote:
(Extract from a review) Darkseed is an innovative game which capitalizes on the drawings of famous horror designer H.R. Giger as a source of background artwork and inspiration.
If you like horror stuff, you will probably like these games !
IIRC they are both DOS games !

I could be wrong but I remember that it had a lot of dead ends... which for me is reason enough to not touch it.
Great atmosphere though.

Indeed, Dark Seed has a great atmosphere, but there are at least two notorious dead ends, and you can better find out beforehand what they are (for they can spoil the game for you; in any case you have to replay quite a big part). The dead ends are caused by not picking up two items that are essential later on in the game. (First spoiler below states what the items are, second one where to find the items).

Spoiler:
Bottle of Scotch (will be gone next day) and a pin.

Spoiler:
Bottle in the shop; pin in the library, on the floor in front of the librarian.

Were those for Darkseed or Darkseed 2 ?

Assuming that those 2 deadends are correct (and I assume they are), that is a great help to anybody who wishes to play the game.

I just don't remember whether I encountered them and had to backtrack, or luckily avoided them (as is always the chance with deadends !!).

It was Dark Seed, but hey, you probably played the game 16 years ago! (And I only remember this so well, because I have replayed the game a few times.)
If you have located the second item that I mentioned by yourself, I must congratulate you after all those years, for that was a big problem for a lot of gamers back then, and I fear I overlooked it too the first time. The player only gets a very subtle hint about where to find it. It is indeed a fine example of pixel hunting (often exaggerated by gamers, I think). In the spoiler below some more info, so you will probably remember the corresponding scenes.

Spoiler:
You need the scotch to be able to talk to your neigbor Delbert on the second day. He is playing with his dog behind your house. Otherwise he will ignore you, and you won't be able to pick up the dog stick, that you'll need later on in the dark world to scare away the Dark World dog, so to speak.
You will probably remember that you had to hide the pin under the pillow in the jail in the normal world, in order to break jail in the dark world.
