Default Hopkins FBI: The Worst Adv game ever?

A few days back i stumbled on this article:
http://www.richardcobbett.co.uk/code...f_hopkins_fbi/

Genuine review or just some rant? What do you think?

That actually kinda makes me want to play the game.

I stopped playing that game because of all the blood and gore.

Haha, same. It's funny; sometimes when something just is that awful and meant to be serious, it kinda turns it around and becomes hilarious. Just like those very awful movies that are so bad they actually make you laugh.

Like this quote:

Now I really wanna play this game!

It's not a great game, but it's far from the worst ever. It has a certain cheesy quality. You could do a lot worse with any of the dozens of Myst clones out there.

Oh, rant. Definitely rant. If it wasn't an... ah... 'interesting' game, it wouldn't have been worth taking a look at. The advantage of a blog is that you can play around with various ideas, try different styles, and goof off sometimes. And yes, it's hyperbole overload, but folks seemed to find it entertaining. Not all, but eh, can't please all the people all the time ;-)

It's got a certain sick charm in that respect. Terrible game, but so bad, you do kinda want to see what manner of wackiness it throws at you next.

(And obviously, 'worst' is part of the hyperbole. I even name a few worse ones in the text. I'd rather play this one than, say, Spud, or those aforementioned Myst games. But for the most part, they're bad because they're boring, not because they're Mystery Science Theatre style Weapons Grade Badness)

Hey, I love this kinda stuff (not the gore in itself, but things that are so bad, that it seems as it could be made from pure badness).
Gonna hunt this one down now, take that you random review guy!

I think the reviewer got confused between serious story and B-movie parody.
This game is obviously a B-movie parody (at least what i thought when i had played it in 2000 )

BTW, Randy Sluganski from justadventure.com seems to have liked this game

No. I just don't consider that to be a Get Out Of Jail Free card for being shit, any more than I'd give American McGee's Bad Game LA a free ride. You can get away with a lot if you're spinning a genre - I got a lot of guilty enjoyment out of Kingdom O'Magic, for instance - but parody/humour isn't a defense against suckage. Look at Scary/Date/Epic Movie.

As a pastiche - parody's too strong, at least for most of the unpleasant stuff outside of calling the villain Bernie Berckson - it suffers from the age-old problem: take all the worst bits of a genre and you're going to end up smelling of them. Without some form of commentary, or taking it beyond shoving naked dead women onto the screen and giggling "Hehe, boobies..." it's just more tiresome immaturity trying to pretend it's aimed at adults. The fact that it's primarily creepy necrophilia doesn't exactly help.

Ugh. It's just awful. It stuns me that it got positive reviews, although most of the ones I saw seemed to be stretching to be nice. Both Quandary and JA give it lots of props for simply being an adventure game, and the specifics... well...

The puzzles in Hopkins FBI are actually a step above the usual fare we are accustomed to encountering in a point-and-click game. Whereas many adventure games would have you get your car keys off a table and then use them with your car, the creators of Hopkins went that extra step and required you to search under the sofa cushions to find where your keys have fallen out of your pants pocket.
Awesome. Now let's get the grenade out of the office desk!

I'm gonna buy a copy of this game, take a photo of me playing it, and email it to that reviewer. Hell! I'll get all my friends and family holding their own copies around me.

It would be worth it to see what his response was.

Seriously, I recently watched Return of the Killer Tomatos and that's put me right in the mood for random s**t. Where can I get for 99p?

A grin, followed by moving onto the next message in my inbox? If you say so. I wouldn't bother though, not now you've ruined the surprise. Spend the money on sweeties or something.

And Return of the Killer Tomatoes is a funny movie. Especially the Product Placement joke.

Well, there were clues for the more advanced detectives ;-)

Seriously, I think it's a terrible, terrible game. But the outright hate-spray of that feature is because the whole Agony Booth/Jabootu style treatment seemed like it would be entertaining at around 2AM, way back in March. That's about as deep as it gets, really. Some folks found it funny, others, well, not so much. It's reasonably often searched for though, so obviously Hopkins still has a bit of a cult following.

Sure, but you gotta admit that you "enjoyed" it in some way

Remember that moment in the game,
Spoiler:
when Hopkins FBI dies and goes to heaven.....
I was only 14 and my dad had never heard me swear like this-
"WTF.....WTF....WTF is going on here?....WTF....Is this really happening?.....WTF?...."

That got me laughing almost as much as the review did. Great website, by the way, it was the reason I went to bed at three in the morning last night.
