challis, I merged your thread with the other that has some impressions of the game.

Penumbra + HaptX
This past summer, I discovered Penumbra. I played the demo; it appeared to be a well designed and executed game. But surfing Gamasutra's product guide, I came across this feature.
With the HaptX technology involved in the game, I must play this game. Here is a video that demonstrates the technology in Quake 4. |

You'll need the proper hardware to experience it, of course. The Novint Falcon referenced in the Gamasutra article, for example, will run you well over $200.

Your point is well made. The hardware is expensive. But imagining what could be done with adventure games with this hardware excites me greatly. (Still...if it's a good adventure game, the hardware is the least of my concerns. I want solid story and characters.)

I bought this game for Linux.
Was hard enough to get the ATI driver running, but then it told me the graphic card was not supported. That with a laptop I bought very recently and Half Life 2 Episode 1 ran on without problems (except for the stuttering sound of course ). I think I need to buy it again for Windows. That also means to pay the full price again. *sigh* I need to get it cheap. The reason why nearly no games get sold on Linux is that it is still too much a hassle. ATI drivers are the worst of course, but NVIDA isn't a blessing either. And I had some troubles installing Penumbra. And after all it still wouldn't run. Yeah, wonderful. |
