There are a lot of free/fan-developed adventure games on the Adventure Game Studio site. You might want to check those out

dink smallwood was an ausome game, it was origanly a marketed game. but, did'nt do well so they gave it out as freeware, the game is pritty short, loads of fun to play. a few years ago they releaed an expansion that was soposed to add an other 5 hours of game play.

I wasn't aware of ******. Is it legal? They seem to have a lot of free games there.

its all perfectly legal, its classed as abandonware, such as BaSS. its basically when a game company offers a game for free because they have stopped making it. although most companies are very "tight" in giving up their games for free.

Actually, I just read the "About Us" page and their FAQ's, and as it turns out, it's not completely legal as abandonware in itself isn't legal. At least that's what I managed to get out of it.
They do have a couple of rare games for free download in there, though...

No, it's not warez. That's a totally different thing from abandonware as far as I'm aware of. Abandonware is when a game is given up by it's publisher/developer, no longer produced or selled(except from on e-bay, but that's not profitable for them anyway). Besides, Underdog serves as a good page for underrated adventure games, if a game is not abandonware, they give you links as to where to buy it.
But since Adventure Gamers doesn't want to have links to those pages, either, it's better to have taken it down.

You should try Out of Order, it's a classic point and click adventure game. And it's freeware.

Cubert Badbone rules. It's pretty easy, but it's got a good style and funny characters.

Yeah, I liked it too. Even my sister liked it, who doesn't play many games at all.

Also, the creator(s?) of Dink Smallwood also have other games for download. Some are trials, some are free I think. http://www.rtsoft.com

Here is a list of a few of the ones I've got 'round to reviewing so far. They're pretty much all good. Oh and of course there's the classic agagames

There aren't all that many non-AGS games (or at least not that many compared to those made with AGS), but as people have mentioned, Out of Order and Cubert Badbone are great. The Breakdown and Ozzie And The Quantum Playwright are good too. Apart from those, check the AGS games page.

The single most awesome amateur game I have played is Pleughburgh: Dark Ages - although I didn't really like the Calsoon games, which are from the same guy. I also enjoyed most of Yahtzee's games, particularly the most recent two - Odysseus Kent and 5 Days a Stranger. The Larry Vales series is worth checking out too, and 6 Day Assassin is another decent little game.

Can't beleave nobody mentioned Kings Quest 1 VGA remake and Kings Quest 2 VGA from Tierra. These two are ones of the best amateur adventures (links to them can be also found on AGS page), especially the second one. Almost lives up to the standarts of early Sierra.
