What's the best adventure game dialogue
I say the dialogue at the bar scene in Full Throttle
Ben: You know what might look better on your nose? Quohog: What? Ben: [grabs Quohog's nose ring and slams him down on to the bar] THE BAR. Also the narrating line at the beginning is pretty good "Whenever I smell asphalt, I think of Maureen. That's the last sensation I had before I blacked out; that thick smell of asphalt. She said she'd fix my bike. Free. No strings attached. I shoulda've known then that things were never that simple. Yeah, when I think of Maureen, I think of two things: Asphalt, and trouble."

There's not even any competition: Guybrush Threepwood meeting Elaine for the first time, hands down. And I mean that seriously.

I have to go with the Solid Snake on this one. Full Throttle was brimming with great dialogue and it had 100 times more bite than most comedy adventure games. The Monkey Island dialogue was soft, slapstick and quite groan-inducing, I found.

Below is the encounter in its entirety. Don't read this if you haven't played and don't want to be spoiled, because it loses something in my retelling. ELAINE: I'm Governer Elaine Marley. [closeup on her face] So, I gave you the idol, eh? [dialogue options:] -Uh... -Gee... -Well... -Gosh... Relax, Mr. Threepwood. I know why you're here. Believe me, you're not the first who's tried. Although, I have to admit, not many get as far as you have. -Er... -Um... -Golly... -Jeepers... My lookout told me of your arrival. I've wanted to meet you ever since I heard your fascinating name. Tell me, Guybrush, why do you want to be a pirate? You don't look like one. Your face is too... ...sweet. [she smiles] -Blfft... -Grlpyt... -Hrdrl... -Rldft... I see...[she frowns] Well, you're obviously not in the mood for idle chitchat, are you? I suppose you've got many more exciting things to do. I won't take up any more of your time, Mr. Threepwood. [she leaves] GUYBRUSH: Bgglw! [steps closer to follow] Mfrnkf? [another step] Dmnkly... --sigh-- I really wish I knew how to talk to women. Last edited by MoriartyL; 06-08-2006 at 11:54 AM. |

I don't know why, but the line in Broken Sword one where George says,
very mild spoiler warning "Don't shoot! I'm an American! I'm innocent!" "Can't make up your mind, eh?" Stands out for me |

All of the monkey islands have great dialogue.
As far as bad dialogue.. The longest journey, with its trying to be meaningful discussions with the lesbian landlady. |

Grim Fandango in my opinion, but that may be a combination of writing and excellent voice talent. Tony Plana was just brilliant as Manny, he makes the most ordinary lines sound like something special.
Example: ( I don't think this is a spoiler ) "He obviously has no idea how close I am to escape!" Also the scene where Manny and Meche speak for the first time, well written indeed. Or (loosely quoted) "We used to crawl around like worms... but from now on we will soar like eagles on pogo sticks!" - Glottis |

Hmm, scads of dialogue from Gabriel Knight comes to mind. My favorite line is from the opening scene of the first game though.
"I've told you it's that voodoo book you're researching. That stuff can seriously screw up your karma." "I'm sure that's it. Maybe I should write a horror novel on passive resistance intead." Tim Curry and Leah Remini may be needed to truly sell that line, but I still love it . |

Sam: Aww... It's a cute hyper-cephalic kitten.
Max: I'll call him mittens cause I think he'd make a fine pair of them.

Monkey Island 3. Guybrush's barbershop quartet audition was absolutely hilarious.
Second best was his conversation with Murray at the beginning of the game. |

BS1 definitely had brilliant dialogue. I love the interrogation scene between George and the French tailor on the phone (can't remember how it goes, but it definitely involved a tragic story of a slain man and his "probable" family and pet dog).

Broken Sword 1 has to be hands down. My favourite dialog is from Discworld Noir, but BS1 was excellently scripted and performed by the voice actors. However, Grim Fandango comes very close.

Discworld Noir had a line that went something like, "I wanted to crawl into a bottle of whiskey and hide, but to do that I'd have to be less than a half inch wide." I'm sure I butchered it.. but it made me choke on my drink when Lewton delivered it.

I would probably agree with Broken Sword. Very, very well written.
