Default What Adventure Games Have The Best Serious Stories?

Hi! I am pretty much a newbie to Adventure games. I have played several adventure games when I was younger (such as the Monkey Island, Discworld, etc.) but I haven't played any in several years... but now I am starting to play them again.

I was wondering what are some adventure games that feature terrific and great plots that are serious? I am not looking for games with plots similar to Monkey Island or Discworld or Sam & Max, but rather games that treat its story seriously, such as The Dig, Sanitarium, or Beneath a Steel Sky. I especially enjoy storylines with unexpected plot twists, surprise endings, and a great sense of mystery.

I am not really inquiring about complex puzzles in games; The games could have simplistic ones and be relatively easy as long as the plots are serious and adult in nature (Though it's always better if the puzzels are devishly clever )

I don't really know any other titles that have a terrific storyline. So please post some recommendations on some adventure games with serious, intelligent, and unexpected narratives. Thanks for humoring a newbie

I'd say Still Life, Syberia, Paradise (buggy), Dark Fall, or Myst 4.

All 3 of the Gabriel Knight games have wonderful, indepth stories. Also Zork Nemesis, Amber, Faust, and the Tex Murphy games.

Of course Myst IV had a story.

Spoiler:
Once upon a time, there were too evil brothers. One was smart, and the other was stupid. They misbehaved and their father, a famous novelist, banished them to faraway lands. The smart one escaped, and freed the dumb one. Then they kidnapped their baby sister, who took after the dumb one, and confined her in a house shaped like an onion. A stranger, who happened to be visiting at the time of the kidnapping, travelled through the lands looking for adventure. At one point, he was fed hallucinogenic drugs by a group of crazy women. He recovered from his high, snuck into the onion house, avoided a trap, and rescued the girl. THE END.

Really? I always thought 2 was the least serious. It got pretty stupid in parts. Very strange because I always thought the original handled itself very sophiscately.

The Moment of Silence would be a great example of in-depth story... conspiracy plots are always good!

Serious story? Sanitarium and Black Mirror have psychologically twisted stories, also well told. The problem with these is, as soon as you've figured it out, you lose all motivation to continue playing. That's why comedy adventures or adventures with a fine atmosphere are superiour to those with a twisted plot with unexpected endings, mainly because you are able to figure those endings out.

I have to agree with Rauli and say that The Moment of Silence had a very interesting and serious story with a great ending. The game had certain flaws, but I enjoyed it immensely. The story is IMO it`s strongest point.

The Gabriel Knight games have very serious stories, but still aren't short of comic moments that flow perfectly with the game.

In term of story, the more the series goes, the more intersting it gets. The first one is mostly books reading, but the fourth has a lot of cinematics the make the story unfold.

Games with serious stories that I enjoyed...
(Although I enjoyed the stories in these games, I didn't always enjoy them as games.)

Amerzone
Dark Side of the Moon
Dreamfall
Faust
Gabriel Knight 1, 2, and 3
Grim Fandango (if TLJ is serious, I'd say GF is also)
The Longest Journey
Moment of Silence
Morpheus
Ripper
Sanitarium
Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring
Syberia
Temujin
Zork Nemesis

That's all I'm remembering at the moment.
