Atlantis games
What's the difference between the Atlantis series, Beyond Atlantis series and Atlantis Evolution ?
Is there a difference? Is the series any good? I like the Myst games (especially Riven and Revolution), but I dislike Aura. |

... deep breath...
They really aren't a "series" other than in name only. There's only the loosest of story connection between Atlantis, Atlantis II (Beyond Atlantis in North America) and Atlantis III (Beyond Atlantis II). In fact, it's so loose I don't even remember what it is - one of those "the hero is the second cousin of the first game's housekeeper's brother-in-law" kinda deals. In other words, consider them all standalone games. They're all first-person, node movement games with the 360-degree spin-o-rama-view. Atlantis had a limited save system and a fair number of tricky timed action parts that people hated. The next two games ditched those and are pretty much straightforward adventures. Hard to say whether you'd like them, since I can't tell what you did and didn't like about the three you mentioned. They're very esoteric, though, so don't expect them to make a lot of sense. You might like the puzzles, though. Another game came out called Curse of Atlantis in North America (Thorgal's somethingorother in Europe) that has absolutely nothing to do with the first three. Atlantis Evolution was made by former Cryo guys, so it shares a lot in common with the first three, though it's not technically connected at all. It adds back in a lot of (bad) action-y stuff, so it's closer in gameplay to the first Atlantis than the others. |
