Default MYST V review on GameSpot...

Just saw that GameSpot has added their review of MYST V giving it a 7.9. It's a fair and respectable review, written by someone who obviously loved the series and is sad to see it end.

Quote:
Myst V concludes this landmark series with dignity and style, delivering a challenging and sophisticated adventure that contains a number of satisfying moments.
The reviewer seemed dissapointed with the lack of interaction with the environment (compared to Myst IV) and felt that what began as an intruiging story, ultimately felt like a bit of a let down. He also meantioned that the greatest aspect of the game (as well as the rest of the Myst series) were it's puzzles, with the implementation of the stone slate as a welcome addition.

Quote:
Fortunately, Myst V does succeed at presenting you with some difficult, interesting puzzles. Pattern recognition and keen observation of subtle cause and effect will help you overcome the environmental challenges impeding your progress. In each age, you'll find a slate--a mystical stone tablet, which you may pick up and carry around and also inscribe with special symbols. The slates are a new addition to the traditional point-and-click gameplay, and they introduce a pleasant twist to the series' formula, yet without unnecessarily complicating the deliberately simple mechanics. Basically, the slates are used to communicate with those weird creatures you see early on, called the bahro. The bahro may teleport, or "link," at a moment's notice, and if you drop a slate on the ground, one of them will show up and return it to its pedestal.
As it turns out, MYST V isn't the disappointment that many of us at AG thought it would be. Considering that GameSpot is often rather harsh on its Adventure Games (Voyage was also recently reviewed, recieving a measly 6), their MYST V review is a welcome change from this pattern and shows Cyan has done well. Let's just hope that the sales of MYST V match the scores it's been recieving. Cyan deserves a successful farewell.
