I love all Sid Meier's games, which include the wonderful Civilisation games of course!

My own favorites:

Wing Commander: Definitely kick-ass. Not to mention WC3 and 4 are excellent examples of how to do FMV right, and gave me renewed appreciation of Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and John Rhys-Davies.

Civilization: The original is a classic, and Alpha Centauri is a fabulous SF "update" that drips with atmosphere.

Fallout: Great kitschy humor combined with some serious SF-themed moral dilemmas. I too am looking forward to seeing how Fallout 3 shapes up.

StarTropics: How can you not love a game series with a redheaded be-freckled teenager who goes around tropical islands throwing yo-yos at mutant slugs, sticking bananas in his ears, and dressing up as a woman, while trying to save his uncle from space aliens? And then, later, gets to travel around time doing such things as delivering pizza to Cleopatra and collecting magical Tetris pieces?

Peace & Luv, Liz

I would have to say Ultima.

From the Ultima Underworld games and 8 excellent Ultima games.

P.S Very good article in this weeks Escapist on how Wing Commander killed Origin or at least they were a company ahead of its time CD's could have saved them possibly.

Yeah, that latest issue is quite excellent.

I would've missed it again propably, but Chris of course put news about it to Shack today.

I love the Silent Hill series. They're scary, they're intelligent, and they've got soundtracks that rival the best movies. I am willing to buy a PS3 if SH5 comes out for it.

Top four:

1. Thief
For the tension and the brilliantly constructed game universe.

2. System Shock
As for Thief but slightly less so.

3. Half Life
For the spectacular set pieces and great gameplay

4. Dark Forces / Jedi Knight
For the level design (and light sabres )

Others in random order:
Prince of Persia (1, 2 and SoT);
Another World / Flashback / Fade to Black - if that counts as a franchise (and yes, I liked Fade to Black when it was released );
Sonic (1 & 2), especially on 8-bit

That would be the level design that fell apart in Jedi Outcast, right?

I know what you mean, though .

Heh, heh. That would be the one

Although I still thought Outcast was better than most stuff on the market. Now Jedi Academy on the other hand...

Does Ico/Shadow of the Colossus count? If not, I suppose Ecco the Dolphin. Ecco Jr. doesn't count. Or maybe Street Fighter. There countless awful Street Fighter games, but the few good ones are so good I can forget the others. Or maybe Prince of Persia--excluding 3D/Arabian Nights and Warrior Within, of course.

Frankly, I've had enough with sequels. I would much rather see original ideas.

Yeah the damn bastards. I can take all the crap that is being dished out, but screwing up this franchise pisses me off the most. Warrior within was my most anticipated game last year, and it was by far my biggest disappointment.
Good news: The Two Thrones is increasingly looking like it will be an apology for Warrior Within.

Warrior Within's Prince wanted little more than personal salvation, but Sands of Time's tried on several occasions to sacrifice himself for others. Now we're back to that. Now the Prince is once again fighting to save his city, his family, his people, and his kidnapped love. He's the hero and not some random jerk.

"I am on a neverending quest to save my girlfriend!"

It sounds like the plot for nearly every Xandir Zelda game, no scratch that, nearly every single console rpg. Doesn't sound generic at all!

Wing Commander for me. A series way ahead of its time and vastly enjoyable, not just for the games themselves but for the (still very active) community behind it. I poured entirely too many hours into playing a Wing Commander roleplaying game, for instance, not something I would do for anything else.

Wing Commander has also spawned some of the best fan-games I've ever played. If you're a Wing Commander fan and you haven't played Unknown Enemy, you're missing out! I hear Standoff is pretty good too.

Not bad considering the last official Wing Commander game came out in 1998 (as an episodic Internet release - now where have we heard that idea recently...) and Origin has long since been slain by EA.

Don't forget the supremely bad movie (allegedly; I haven't seen it)...

I think it's best if we do.

I'll make sure I tell you the next time it appears on BBC2! The one time I saw it, the transmission broke down halfway through - I had to sit through part of it twice! The horror, the horror.

Such a shame, because the plot of Wing Commander 4 - and the same cast and sets - would have made an awesome movie.

I'm going to just write my favorite non-adventure game franchises in a list, and here it is:

1. The Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series.
2. No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.
3. The two Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic games.
4. The Deus Ex Series.

Selective editing is fun!

The plot, as you described it, is the same as all three games in the original Prince of Persia trilogy.

The Prince of Persia series has always had generic stories. It just (usually) tells them well so no one cares that they're generic.

I've actually got the DVD if you want to "borrow" it
