...and a boat.

Congrats to [toj.cc]Phantom for spotting the film, and Trep for getting part of what it's meant to reprezent. With a "z".

I was thinking it was from Master and Commander, but Lucien's saying that it wasn't good made me doubt.

Nope. Master & Commander was crap. I nearly fell asleep watching it. It has no plot (Just a poor excuse for some sea battles), wasn't all that interested in the characters and apart from Paul Bettany the acting wasn't that great.

Oh and Russell Crowe is a twat.

Whatever.

I thought it was brilliant, and I don't like Russel Crowe! As an exercise in tension, atmosphere, historical realism and character acting it was superb. Granted, the plot was thin, but the film was so wonderfully crafted, the chase between the two ships became exciting in itself... the happenstance became the plot. It also had an amazing score, the best sound effects work I've ever heard, beautiful cinematography and career-best performances. If ever there was a film that put you somewhere in history and pulled you along in its wake, it's this one.

But you're entitled to your opinion. Even, as I always say, if it's wrong.

One thing I loved with this movie : the french are the ennemy, but they're not the "bad guys". In fact, that's one of the rare big budget american movies where there are no good or bad guys, just two ships and two captains fighting against each other. And in this case, they're almost both as skilled and clever.
I love the ending, too. Oops...

I'm not doubting it's historical accuracy or that there are a couple of spectacular bits of cinematography in the battle scenes, but I was just not all that impressed with the film. C'est la vie.

Plus if you ever read the books they completely PG-13'd life at sea and completely changed the doctors backstory as in the books he is an intellegence agent that used to fight for the French and defected.
Also in the book version "Far side of the World" it's an American Frigate not a French ship, but I guess they just mixed some of the books together.

I preferred Hornblower.

Never, ever expect a movie version of a film to be the same as the book. Visually, it might not be what you saw in your head, and they changed a LOT, from what I've heard, to tighten the book up into a movie with an acceptable running time. I hardly think they PG-13'd it either. Peoples arms being blown off, brains exposes, splinters of wood gouging peoples left right and centre... they could only fit so much information in, and it's a long movie already.

The cinematography was fantastic throughout - the opening shots over water, the slow truck through the ship below the hammocks... I can't see how you'd say "bits" of it were good. The whole thing was immaculately created, but that's my opinion - Peter Weir is a genius when it comes to visuals.

The movie used the Doctor and Aubrey as two sides of the same character. To me, having seen the film and not read the book, it makes sense to use someone who's not actually part of the conflict in a soldier sense, or used to the terminology and way of life these guys have. He acts as our siphon into that world - we, being people of science and modernity, looking through him at a world that once was. We also share in his delight and disappointment as the journey continues. Were it not for him, the film would've seemed alien - he's our grounding in reality and brings the entire film together. He's also responsible for reigning in Aubrey to face harsh realities he'd otherwise miss, and see other things in the world which he seems to pass by.

As for the ship, there's an easy answer to that. They changed the frigate to French as they were unsure how American audiences would take to it, which was probably a wise move on their part.

So true.
That's why I love movies like Dune, which used the book only as a support for the movie, and why I wasn't impressed by Lord of the Rings, which tried too hard to "be the book".

There's a lot of- how do you put it - Sex of a male nature in the novels as it was common practice on ships in those days.

Damn randy Sailors.

So they definetly PG-13'd the books.

And of course they will change alot. Very rarely do they compare, the books are always better except for Lord of The Rings where they made a silk purse out of a sows ear.

There was 20 books in the series and the captain was a severly overweight man and all the gay sex and heaven forbid we might upset the Americans by making them the baddies. They had to condense and alter it into one movie.

I wouldn't have bothered if it was a decent movie (I'm glad they took out the buggery as that doesn't interest me), but as I said I wasn't all that fussed with it. Too many shots of Crowe standing there with his long hair blowing in the wind not doing a hell of a lot for me.

It did win the Cinematography Oscar that year, but I was probably too bored to notice it.
