You've just touched on my pet hate with modern day cinema. These days, filmmakers tent to get over zealous with the CGI. They show you the creatures/monsters to an extent that they cease to scare you anymore. The way it should be done is the way you described. The filmmaker should build suspense and let the audience form their own mental image of the horror protagonist. After all, the imagination is a far better tool than CGI will ever be. I'm not bringing down CGI, it is a huge development in cinema, but I'm a strong believer that horrors should be done the traditional way. That's why the original 'Alien' and 'Psycho' movies are still kicking unsuspecting arse today

Which is why you don't need a lot of money to make a great scary movie. Just don't show the "enemy" too often and for too long. Quick flashes will do. I'm a specialist in this kind of stuff
