Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 40 million copies worldwide
Cyberpunk 2077 was a huge undertaking from CD Projekt Red, taking the studio from its more medieval The Witcher roots into a futuristic, crime-ridden city that was worlds away from what it was comfortable with.
If you followed closely on launch, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly the smoothest, with many a meme spawning from the sheer number of game-breaking bugs and performance issues.
As the years have gone by, it has only gone from strength to strength, and as of July 3, 2026, 40 million copies have been sold, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.
CD Projekt RED celebrates Cyberpunk 2077 selling 40 million copies
This figure was shared alongside a celebratory post from CD Projekt RED, noting that the total includes copies of Cyberpunk 2077 sold on its own, as well as those included in the Ultimate Edition bundle.
The studio confirmed in November 2025 that the game had passed 35 million copies, meaning it has shifted another five million in roughly seven months.
Part of that continued momentum is likely down to the current Steam Summer Sale. Cyberpunk 2077 is available at 70% off, while the Ultimate Edition is 60% off and Phantom Liberty is 40% off, making it a tempting time for anyone who somehow still hasn’t taken the trip to Night City.
What’s more, Cyberpunk 2077 recently peaked at 87,848 concurrent players on Steam during the sale period, meaning people aren’t just buying the game and leaving it in their virtual backlog; they actually want to play through the experience.
The game’s redemption arc has been helped massively by its big updates, the Phantom Liberty expansion, and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, keeping the wider universe in the conversation. Phantom Liberty itself had already reached 10 million copies sold by the end of 2025, further proving that players weren’t just coming back, they were actually willing to pay for more.
With Cyberpunk 2 already part of CD Projekt Red’s future plans, this milestone gives the studio a massive foundation to build from. Cyberpunk 2077 may have had one of gaming’s roughest launches, but 40 million copies later, the lights are very much still on in Night City.
