Riven’s VR Revival: A classic reimagined
The immersive world of puzzle gaming is set to take a giant leap forward as Cyan Worlds Inc announces the launch of Riven on the Meta Quest 2 & 3 virtual reality platforms. The modern remake of the classic puzzle adventure game, Riven, is scheduled to launch this summer, offering players the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the game's puzzles and adventures. The game will also be available on Windows (VR and flatscreen) and Mac. More details about the summer launch are expected soon.
Cyan Worlds has been at the forefront of bringing classic games into the virtual reality realm. Their from-the-ground-up remake of Myst launched on the Meta Quest platform in 2020 and was met with great enthusiasm from players. The company hopes to recreate this success with Riven, taking advantage of the increased power and higher resolution of the Meta Quest 3 to deliver a truly spectacular gaming experience.
The update to Riven, the first since 1997, will allow players to explore the game with a sense of immersion and freedom that comes from actually being in the game world. Co-founder of Cyan Worlds, Rand Miller, expressed his excitement saying, “One of the most astounding experiences for me is being fully immersed in Riven in VR with no strings attached on Meta Quest 3. It’s mind-blowing to have jumped from the original static images to wrapping myself in Riven.”
The game will delve further into the lore that Cyan’s first game, Myst, only hinted at. It will tightly integrate its puzzles into a sprawling and decaying world that plunges players into a conflict between the world’s villainous ruler and those rebelling against him. The visuals, cinematics, and overall scope have made Riven difficult to adapt, but the remake utilizing Unreal Engine 5 and leveraging the capabilities of the Meta Quest system is set to allow both old and new fans to experience the iconic 3D world like never before.
Riven is a modern remake of the 1997’s monster hit Riven: The Sequel to Myst, and it serves as a love letter to the classic narrative-driven puzzle games of the ’90s. As players explore the decaying age of Riven, they will feel like archeologists, slowly unravelling the mysteries of a bygone era.
