1.                                Introduction

=======================================

King's Quest I is set in the land of Daventry, where King Edward the Benevolent
is ill. He summons his most loyal Knight Graham to castle, and explains that he
has little time left to live. He mentions three treasures that were lost long
ago: A mirror that can tell the future, a magical shield that protects the
bearer from harm, and an enchanted chese that was always filled with gold. The
king hopes that with the treasures found, Daventry may return to the wonderful
place it used to be. The king explains that if the treasures are found, Graham
will take his place as King of Daventry. Graham accepts, and sets off into the
land of Daventry to find the three lost treasures.

This superb VGA remake of the classic 1983 original is very impressive. The
graphics have been given a noteable upgrade and look absolutely stunning in
places, while the control system has changed from text based (where commands
had to be typed) to a newer icon based system that was first seen in King's
Quest V. Anyone who has played the original will only encounter some minor
differences in gameplay here, but the visual and audio differences are huge. A
speech pack can even be downloaded to further immerse players in this fantasy
world. This game is freely available from https://www.agdinteractive.com/, and I
highly recommended it to all fans of adventure games.

2.                                Walkthrough

=======================================

The game starts outside the castle. West. West. Walk behind the small rock and
push it to reveal a hole. Get the dagger from the hole. North. Climb the big
tree at the left side of the area. Walk carefully along the branch toward the
nest at the top of the tree. Get the egg and drop off the side of the branch to
fall down from the tree. West. West to the well. Use the dagger on the rope
above the bucket to get the bucket.

Use the crank to lower the rope into the well. Use the rope to climb down it,
then click the water to drop into it. Use the water again to dive down below
the surface. Swim into the hole at the top-left corner of this area and use the
path to get out of the water. Use the bucket with the water to fill it, then
walk west to arrive in the cave of a dragon. Use the bucket of water with the
dragon to douse the fire, causing the cave to fill with smoke. Get the mirror.

West. North. South. South. Look in the hole at the top of the stump to see a
pouch inside. Get the pouch and look at it in the inventory to see that it is
full of diamonds. West. North. North. West. Get a clover from the patch. South.
A fairy will show up and give you a spell that will protect you. West. Walk
west onto the garden and get a carrot. North. North. West. Get the bowl near
the tree and look at it in the inventory. West.

Get a walnut on the grass and use it on Graham to open it, revealing gold
inside. South. South. South. West. Get the pebbles. South. West. Enter the
house. Use the bowl on Graham to fill it. Give the bowl to the woodcutter and
get the fiddle from the table. Exit the house. South. South. Use the house to
eat some of it. Open the door. Enter the bedroom and wait for the witch to
enter the house and move to the stove. Walk up near to the witch and push her
into the cauldron. Open the cabinet and get the cheese.

Get the note from the bedside table in the bedroom and look at it in the
inventory. Exit the house. West. South. South. Open the gate to the pen and
give the carrot to the goat. Exit the pen and the goat should start to follow
Graham. South. West. South. South. Start to cross the bridge and the goat will
hit the troll out of the way. West. Talk to the gnome and he will ask you to
guess his name. Type "Ifnkovhgroghprm" at the prompt.

The gnome will give Graham some beans for correctly guessing his name. East.
East. Use the beans with the soil in the middle of the area and a big beanstalk
will grow from the ground. Use the beanstalk to start climbing it. Remember to
save at various points when you climb up the beanstalk, as it is very easy to
fall off. Up. Up. Walk east along the clouds. East. South. East. East. Get the
slingshot from the hole of the right tree. North. West to see the giant.

Keep walking around the tree at the left side of the area and the giant will
eventually get tired of following Graham. After the giant falls asleep, get the
chest and walk east. Enter the cave and walk down the path to the door at the
end of the cave. Use the door to exit the cave. East. Wait for the elf to
appear. Talk to the elf to get a ring. North. East. East. South. East. East.
Wait until the bird appears in the area.

Walk behind the small rock on the left side of this area, and jump to grab onto
the bird when it is flying above Graham to be taken to a new location. West.
Get the mushroom. East. Fall down the hole. South. West. Walk close to the rat
and give the cheese to it. After the rat disappears, open the door and use the
fiddle on Graham in the room with the two leprechaun guards. West. Get the
sceptre and the shield. West. Use the mushroom with Graham and then go through
the hole. East. North. North. East. East. Open the door to complete the game.
