This probably isn't gonna be too difficult..

It took me a long time to finish this. I think it is for that reason that parts of it still remain etched in my memory.

There is so much more to this game than what the screenshots, or even the game's main description, portray. The case is enveloped in suspense that you can almost feel as you play. The killer you seek is as mysterious as Sherlock Holmes' Moriarty. The murders are part of a deep, dark secret that opens the doors to an ancient, supernatural cult.

There is a World Map for travel to different places that appear after you hear or read about them. Numerous objects can be found while exploring. Your inventory items can be turn around, opened or closed and combined with others (which is sometimes the only way to solve a puzzle).

Perhaps the only real issue to put an adventure gamer off about this one is the difficulty. This was hands down the HARDEST game I've ever played. The puzzles involved have a certain logic behind them, but I only tended to pick up on it in hindsight.

You can die in this game. And decisions made at the end of the game can result in 2 distinct endings. Both endings provide a more than satisfactory conclusion to the game.

That might very vaguely sound like GK1. Except for the part about turning the inventory items around. So it's probably not that. Still worth a try.

Broken Sword?

Psychocandy 02-28-2012 10:42 AM

Post Mortem? I don't remember that being too difficult, but it's worth a guess!

Annoymous Broccoli 02-28-2012 03:46 PM

Nope non of those.

Heres another, leaving the obvious giveaways out..

This is a little known point and click adventure.

The puzzles are engaging but difficult. If you are a casual gamer then you will struggle from the start.

The storyline is really engaging from the start and builds up dramatically as the game continues. The plot deals with brutal murders and the occult so may not be everyones cup of tea, however no one can say that the mystery isn't intriging. I would find myself thinking about the plot even when I wasn't playing the game and was fascinated to get to the end and solve the mystery. The end is a long time coming! It took me three weeks to complete this game first time around and never once did I become bored or frustrated. The plot also takes in real life historical events and includes visiting the USA and Germany. The way that ficticious characters and events are integrated into the real life events is plausible and well done. The links never seem ridiculous or contrived.

When you posted the first review, my first intuition was, for some reason, Mystery of the Druids. But since I haven't played it, I decided to guess something else. However, since the new review says it's little known, that'll be my guess.

Annoymous Broccoli 02-28-2012 04:03 PM

To be honest I wouldn't say it's little known around these parts. Good guess but it's not Mystery of the Druids (I haven't played that either) but it was released a bit before that game.

PS2 adventure gamers don't have an awful lot of choice, so it's easy to recommend ******. It's a meaty, well-plotted game. The story is a murder mystery set in a 1920s' Japanese mansion. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife and it's actually quite creepy in parts. The game does a good job of transporting you into another world - there's something very appealing in a well-executed period detective mystery.

For those who remember it, ******* is in some ways quite similar to the old "Cruise for a Corpse" on the PC, Atari ST and Amiga. You'll spend a lot of time talking to people and there's lots and lots of text to read. Get ready for a fair bit of pixel-hunting too. You definitely get your money's worth!

While I would whole-heartedly recommend buying this game, especially at its budget price, a word of caution is in order: ******** is no Resident Evil 4 on the production values front. It falls below the standards set in most Capcom titles, with pre-rendered backgrounds and no anti-aliasing on the characters, which look like cardboard cut-outs. The animation too is horrible, as are the character models. There's not much recorded conversation either, which is not too much of a shame because the dubbing is awful. It may sound as if I am laying into the game but I really am very fond of it. It is just fair to point out that it is technically a mess! The great thing is, though, that it doesn't matter a jot. This is a triumph of substance over form: we're here for the story and the puzzles - and ******* delivers.

Goldeneye 03-14-2012 06:19 PM

Oh it's glass rose isn't it? the PS2 part gives it away

pointandcliklover 03-20-2012 11:41 AM

iv'e said one, i've said it twice, i'll say it again ...i hate thrid year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway yes you are right, glass rose, your turn.
