Written by Ivo Teel -

Persona Theory Games' upcoming release, Kabaret, is a dark fantasy narrative adventure game based on Southeast Asian myths and legends. The game follows the story of Jebat, a cursed boy who is taken into the mystical and violent monster realm of Alam Bunian. In his quest to break his curse, Jebat works for the owner of Kabaret, known as The Caretaker, performing tea ceremonies for the dwellers of the realm and gathering information.

Players can explore Kabaret and interact with over 20 mythical creatures, each with unique stories inspired by Southeast Asian folklore. Kabaret features six different endings, each with its own unique route, allowing players to pave their own way through the game. The game also includes traditional Southeast Asian games such as Guli and Congkak, adding a layer of cultural immersion for players.

Kabaret's stylized hand-drawn art style and traditional musical soundtrack create a captivating atmosphere for players to immerse themselves in the world of Southeast Asian mythology. The game's sound design is done by Hello Universe, with Indonesian band Sambasunda contributing to the soundtrack. Wings fund the game and is part of ID@Xbox. Persona Theory Games is thrilled to represent Malaysia in the Xbox Extended Showcase alongside other indie game developers worldwide.

Kabaret has already garnered much interest from Malaysian and Southeast Asian audiences through TikTok, and the demo is now available on the Kabaret Steam page. Kabaret is set to release today, April 5th 2023, on Steam, Epic, and Xbox, bringing the captivating world of Southeast Asian folklore to players around the world.
