Photographs finishes development with Steam launch

Written by Jack Allin -

Every photograph tells a story. Indie developer EightyEight Games's newly-released Photographs, however, tells five different stories, none of which are anything alike.

While few specific plot details have been (or really can be) revealed, Photographs is a "narrative tragedy puzzle game" presented in the form of dioramas that are "divided into five distinct stories, set in five different times and locations." Players will need to "learn how to solve progressively difficult puzzles in one story" before moving onto the next, and yet this is not merely a puzzle game, as the "dioramas, the photographs, the sound, the voices, and the puzzles come together to create a cohesive narrative experience that tells that specific story."

Presented in stylish pixel art graphics by Octavi Navarro with an original soundtrack by Ben Prunty, Photographs not only tells five distinct tales, but also involves "completely different gameplay" between them. The first scenario, for example, is about the changing relationship between an alchemist and his granddaughter, which informs the rules for "a very simple puzzle game where you can move their two characters around the grid to an exit." A later chapter about "a man who inherits a family business, the sense of duty and obligation that brings, and a personal desire to spread joy in the world and trying to connect people," however, has its own set of "very different mechanics" in order to progress.

Having been developed largely under the radar, Photographs is now complete and available on Steam for Windows PC, with Mac, Linux, iOS and Android releases to follow later on. To learn more about this unique game, be sure to drop by the official website for additional details.
