Well, one thing's for sure –- there's nothing better than seeing PowerGirl's reactions to Ultra-Humanite's origin story.

That was careless of you. Did she buy it with her own money? (thus not giving you the opportunity to read it before she knew it was in the house) :D

An excellent collection of short stories (I have Smoke and Mirrors which contains many of the same stories but is aimed at adults)

I just bought this collection as well, which is funny, since it's already my second purchase based on your recommendations (the other one being an anthology of short stories by Philip K. Dick, which I loved). Give us more!

stepurhan 07-12-2010 05:09 AM

Glad my taste coincides with yours. :)

If you like horror short stories then you could do a lot worse than look at Horowitz Horror by Anthony Horowitz. Ostensibly a children's book but the stories are truly inventive with many a chilling final twist. (kids love to be scared anyway)

Cheers! I'll take a look at it (after I finish the Gaiman stories).

As always with me - an odd combo...

The second novel/manga volume of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is a lighthearted sci-fi comedy:

Followed by something that's much more serious, mature and darker:

Trumgottist 07-27-2010 01:51 PM

Johann Joseph Fux - The Study of Counterpoint (I want to learn more about creating music)
Terry Pratchett: Unseen Academicals (I'll try to not read it for two weeks so I have something to read on the ferry back to the mainland)
Francis O'Neill - O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1850 melodies)
Grey Larsen - The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle (not for the easily intimidated, but it looks good)

No, he isn't. (Or rather, it depends on which people you talk to.)

Indeed!
I've never seen any book of his displayed in a book store. And during all my years as a teacher I haven't seen any of his books in any school library. So I think he's pretty much unknown to most people.

Trumgottist 07-28-2010 06:05 AM

On the other hand, the first books of his I read, I borrowed from the main public library in Visby. They had already then (this was in the mid-nineties) a large collection of his books. The public library in Piteå also has them. (Though when I studied there, I had already reached the point when I'd already read them, and bought the new ones when they came as softcover.)

I have also seen his books in several book stores. Either in the fantasy section or in the "books in English" section, which is where I look for them. (They lose a lot in translation to Swedish.) I'm pretty sure I've seen his books in both book stores in Visby. I know I've seen them in Akademibokhandeln in Stockholm and the pocket book shop in the central station.

He may be pretty much unknown to most people, as you say, but so is probably any fantasy author besides Rowling and Tolkien. Among fantasy readers he seems well known.

What's good about him is that generally, he improves with time. Most of his later books are better than the earlier ones. The first books seem mostly content by being (good!) parody, but after a while they become more grounded. (Compare this to Douglas Adams who just get weirder.)

Chrono-Serge 07-28-2010 04:15 PM

The Passage by Justin Cronin. I am about a third of the way though and enjoying it so far.

I'm not sure how it compares to the anime as I've only seen one episode. I've yet to buy the complete series on DVD. As far as I know, it's faithful to it, but I think the episodes play out in a different order or something.

pointandcliklover 07-29-2010 03:30 PM

i anime i saw in wrong order and it didnt seem to end so i was thinking of getting the manga. How is it so far?

DustyShinigami 07-30-2010 10:06 AM

I'm liking it, yeah. I found the main character - Haruhi - to be likeable after I watched the first episode. It's not the best manga series I've come across though, although to be fair, I'm not that far into it. I prefer the darker series I've read/been reading - Death Note, Hellsing, Higurashi.

The manga is based on the light novels, which I read after a volume of the manga, and I think 2-3 volumes of the manga are based on one novel. So far, nothing seems 'out of order' or anything.

Although quite expensive, I couldn't resist but to buy the Bleach box set. I'll only be sticking to the 21 volumes in this set though, as the series just keeps going on and on and on...

Well, I've got shed loads of books to read now. These should keep me going for quite a while... theoretically. :D

Color Bleach+: Bleach Official Bootleg, a hilarious compilation of colour 4-panel omake gag manga featuring the Bleach cast, followed by profiles of each of the 13 shinigami/soul reaper squads and other random silliness. Luna Sevithiainen 10-05-2010 01:14 PM

Last weekend I went on a book-shopping spree, and got myself:
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy (by J.R.R. Tolkien, but you all know that :P)
- Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire (I recently discovered the musical Wicked, and got so hooked to it that I just have to read this book :P)
- The Pillars of Earth, by Ken Follett
- Dead until Dark, by Charlaine Harris
- Living Dead in Dallas, by Charlaine Harris
- Club Dead, by Charlaine Harris
(Those last three are the books the TV series True Blood is based on, which I'm also hooked to :P)

That's what you get from saving up years of book vouchers: I ended up only paying 20 cent cash, simply because there exists no such thing as a 20 cent voucher :D

I should buy some more novels to be honest. :o

DustyShinigami 10-19-2010 01:03 AM

To be fair, that Lord of the Rings box set I bought not long ago was unsatisfying (not the story, though ;)). The look of the box and the front covers of the books were so boring.

Proof:

http://images.play.com/bc/342390x.jpg

However, I found just what I was looking for:

http://images.play.com/bc/13379239x.jpg

The pictures on the box, the front covers, the inclusion of The Hobbit (as my book needs replacing), and art work to accompany the story throughout - drawn by Alan Lee - make this box set at winner!

I sold my other one on eBay and swiped this one up. :9

From the dealers' room at the Anime North convention the previous weekend (mostly to complete some series):
One Piece v. 17-28
Shaman King v. 1-12
O-Parts Hunter (a.k.a 666 Satan) v. 18
20th Century Boys v. 4
Sand Land
Fushigi Yugi v. 14

Last week, from the comic store:
One Piece v. 49-53
Naruto v. 48
Bleach v. 31
Inuyasha v. 48
20th Century Boys v. 8
Hôshin Engi v. 19

Unfortunately, I collect manga volumes faster than I can read them, so I have like, over 200 unread volumes on my shelf!

...I've just noticed you listed 20th Century Boys, Trunk. Are you still reading it or have you finished it or...? I'm currently reading the series myself; I started it sometime last year after finishing Monster (also by Naoki Urasawa), but I've only completed 3 volumes so far. I've got a long ways to go before reaching the end yet...

Trunkyo 01-23-2012 07:17 AM

I've only read up to volume 6 of 20th Century Boys... With all of the other titles I'm collecting, it sort of took a backseat to other series. :o The English-language release by Viz Media is currently up to volume 18 but should be finished by December with volume 2 of 21st Century Boys (hmm, December 2012, quite fitting, don't you think??? ;)) Assuming the End doesn't occur by then, I'll probably wait until I collect the whole series before resuming with volume 7. I've seen the first live-action movie and it follows the manga pretty closely.

(I just realized, what's scary is the fact that even after a year-and-a-half since I posted that list, I still have about 200 unread volumes!)

Jordan Mechner's The Making of Prince of Persia. An insight into the mind of one of the greatest game developers, and it's also a lot of fun to read. Looking forward to "The Making of The Last Express", which I hope will happen some day.

I can relate. I don't have loads of series at the go, but some series do tend to take a bit of a backseat once I start focusing on another one; it's very easy to get sidetracked. :P

I have all volumes added to my 'Wish List' on amazon... :D According to amazon (UK and US), volume 22 should be out around 7 August...

Have Viz confirmed they're publishing 21st Century Boys? If they are, I didn't know. :o I'll probably be halfway through 20th... by the time they're released. :D

Quote:

To be honest, I wish more publishers would release box sets once they've finished with a series. Trouble is with 20th... there are that many volumes, a box set would be very expensive! Not only that, but it would probably only get a limited release. :frown:

Quote:

I've read the movies have received some flak... I'll still check them out though, but after I've finished the manga. :) I'm surprised an anime series hasn't been done; one was done for Monster.

Fair comment... Though apart from the regulars, I don't think a lot of forumites check the Chit-Chat section much. The post/books would probably get more recognition in the 'Adventure' or 'General' section. But hey... I don't want to dissuade folk from posting if it means the threads I make stay alive. :D

Hey, I didn't know this thread existed (granted, I didn't really search for it), but here goes: last month I bought this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._of_leaves.jpg

Had already read the 2-colour edition of the Dutch translation (thanks to a friend of mine who recommended this some 10 years ago and the local library).
Stumbled upon the full-colour edition when in London last month. The original language AND above all: the full-colour edition. I couldn't resist.
The book is just too good...

I know we've talked about this in the 'Three Questions' thread, but massive kudos again to you.

On a similar note, have you read any Thomas Pynchon? Might be up your alley, if you don't mind a (sometimes frustrating) challenge.
