Latest Books Bought
Identical to the 'DVD's You've Just Bought' thread, but this time books. :D
I found this a week or two ago at the charity shop I work at: http://images.play.com/bc/3352701x.jpg It was brand new; never used. A bargain at only £2! I should watch the movie again at some point. I haven't seen it for awhile. A volunteer at work lent me the second part of the Millenium trilogy: http://images.play.com/bc/9247795x.jpg And then I have part 1 & 2 of the third story arc to the Higurashi When They Cry manga series: http://images.play.com/bc/11609839x.jpg http://images.play.com/bc/12307179x.jpg What about you guys? |
last books I bought were Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time) and the two Dragon Age books

The Elephant by Slawomir Mrozek. A collection of short stories (and I do mean short. 176 pages with 42 stories included) written in Poland in 1957, Extremely satirical (it's a wonder he wasn't locked up for some of his jabs at the reigning communist regime) and genuinely laugh out loud funny in parts. Plus, if you don't like any particular story a new one will be along in a few pages. The Death-Defying Pepper Roux by Geraldine McCaughrean. When he was borne Paul "Pepper" Roux's aunt predicted he would die before he became 14 (Saint Constance told her in a dream) On the day of his fourteenth birthday he runs away in an attempt to avoid his fate, hiding himself in a variety of different lives on the way. (ship's captain, telegram boy and journalist to name but a few) A wonderfully lively book with a vibrant cast of characters and a good ending. |

2666 by Roberto Bolaño
Which I'm reading at the moment. The book is divided into 5 parts that each tell a different story but relate back to the main story which is set in the city of Santa Teresa in the north of Mexico. I'm almost half way through. I also purchased Ulysses by James Joyce. Which I have wanted to read for ages. Has anyone read this? What do you think about it? |

Couldn't resist Terry Pratchett + Discworld + football :) I was also going to buy http://images.military.com/pics/book...0_blackout.jpg Which I've been thinking of buying for a while, but decided to read some reviews to get a better grip of what the book is really like. |
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which I just finished reading, is a masterful combination of history and suspense, and I recommend it highly.
I also recently bought U Is for Undertow by Sue Grafton, Hardball by Sara Paretsky, This Body of Death by Elizabeth George, and Elizabeth Peters' latest Amelia Peabody mystery, A River in the Sky, which I'm reading now. |

Manga, manga and more manga! :D
From the dealers' room at the Anime North convention the previous weekend (mostly to complete some series): One Piece v. 17-28 Shaman King v. 1-12 O-Parts Hunter (a.k.a 666 Satan) v. 18 20th Century Boys v. 4 Sand Land Fushigi Yugi v. 14 Last week, from the comic store: One Piece v. 49-53 Naruto v. 48 Bleach v. 31 Inuyasha v. 48 20th Century Boys v. 8 Hôshin Engi v. 19 Unfortunately, I collect manga volumes faster than I can read them, so I have like, over 200 unread volumes on my shelf! |

As for Bleach, I did consider getting the manga series, but there are just far too many volumes. That series just goes on and on and on... |

I'm actually ashamed I didn't buy it sooner, usually I buy the Discworld books as soon as they're released, despite my preference for paperback instead of hardback, but I actually completely missed that this one was out already |

Not purchased by me as such but kindly purchased for me as a recommendation by a Swedish member of these very forums. I need to finish Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" first but then I'll be right on it. |
that's an impressively long title for a book!
|
Isn't it just. I am told a literal translation of the Swedish title would come out roughly as "The History of Wondrous Love" so I'm not quite sure what is going on there.
|
It slightly depresses me that the only books I've bought recently have been medical textbooks.
Ho hum. |

I'm on holiday this week, and so far have managed to find some time to buy some more books, some new, some used.
In the used category, I bought Tad Williams Otherland paperbacks and War of the Flowers. I have read them, but they were borrowed. Now I have my own copies. I also found a mint hard cover of The Dig. Chapters had a 20% off sale, so I took the opportunity to splurge. I bought: Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb The Enchantment Emporium by Tanya Huff The Gods of Amyrantha ( Haven't read The Immortal Prince yet) The Folding Knife by K. J. Parker - one of my favorite authors now. Magicians by Lev Grossman Sea Glass by Maria Snyder Elfland By Freda warrington - reading it now. |

The Lord of the Rings trilogy box set A bit disappointed the books in this set don't have nifty front covers, but it was only a tenner on amazon and I couldn't pass it up. :) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...RL._SS500_.jpg Only seen an episode or two of the series and found the main character likeable, but I'll check out a few volumes of the manga first before buying the anime. |

Another Haruhi Suzumiya book:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...oL._SS500_.jpg Only this one is the original hardback novel, which is supposed to be better than the manga. |

Part three of the Millenium trilogy - lent to me by the same friend at work who lent me The Girl Who Played with Fire. I thought that book was big, but this looks to be even bigger. In a way, I kinda enjoyed part two slightly more than the first one. I'll have to see how this one pans out. :) |
Two books came in the post today. I'm so excited. :9~
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4L._SS500_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...WL._SS500_.jpg I know. You're all amazed at the wild and crazy avant-garde stuff I read aren't you. :D Free from another forums I'm on as long as I post a short review after reading them. I'll be sure to post it back here so you can all decide if you want to get your own copies. :P |

The Batwoman story is great. I havn't read 52 so not sure how it compares, but it has a decent villian and her connection to Batwoman is cool. The art is superb and changes style for the flashback issues and it hasa Batman Year One vibe for a few issues as it retells her origin story. Highly recommended. I bought the Powergirl trade when it came out and it is flat out the funniest thing DC have done in a while. Amanda Conners art is beautiful and full of little jokes in the background and the script is witty and a lot of fun. It's a shame they both left the book after issue 12 and the new team are not as good. |
