Top Adventure Games - Let's Make Another List

This thread is inspired by Soraria's recent top-10 threads. While I personally find it difficult, if not impossible, to rank the games I've played, I also find the various statistics in these threads interesting.

Here's the thing with this thread: Rank all adventure games you've played, from best to worst. You may group several games together if you think they're equally good.

If enough people answer this (there's no point to it if only one or two people posts), I'll put the results together using ranked pairs. I'm curious to see how the top ten created this way will compare to Sotaria's results, and if any other interesting statistics pop up along the way.

AFGNCAAP 10-22-2006 12:33 PM

I like the idea. This method has two obvious advantages over simply nominating your ten favourite games. For one, it gives a fair exposure to lesser known, but appreciated games. For two, it allows the people who played more games to make more educated votes (and yet equally valid as far as specific games are concerned).

However, the idea of ranking all games I've ever played scares me. :D I might do that, but don't be mad if I end up copying and pasting my top ten and lumping the rest in just a few categories like "excellent", "good", ..., "awful".

You probably meant that already, but just to be sure: this only includes games you've played all the way through, right? Think that would be best to limit it to those. I've played hundreds of games, but when it comes to finished adventures, the list becomes much more manageable. :)

Sounds like a reasonable approach to me.

Yes, unless you feel certain about its place in your list. If you've played halfway through a game, found it awful and don't want to play another minute of it, feel free to put it at the bottom of the list. I'm leaving that as a judgement call. The advantage with this ranking system is that someone who hasn't played game X won't affect its place in the final results.

The main reason I asked for all the games you've played is to prevent the following: Let's say everybody posts their top ten only. One person puts a game in top that's not included on anyone else's list. That game would come out on top since nobody had said they liked another game better than it. The more data, the better results.

I'll post my own list later. I have most of my games elsewhere, and I want to make sure I don't forget anyone.

daikatana_ 10-22-2006 01:06 PM

This topic sounds interesting, but it will be quite hard to dig in memory and write down all ags ive ever played. But ill certainly try :)

daikatana_ 10-23-2006 05:16 AM

Almost done with the list :)
Just checking net if i my list is complete...

GoT 10-23-2006 05:37 AM

i dont think there's anyway i can pick out of my brain all the adventures i've played.. i'll only be able to remember the obvious ones.... i definetly think this is a great approach to doing a best game thread tho... good idea.

PolloDiablo 10-23-2006 01:01 PM

A site that may help jog some memories: http://adventure-archiv.de has a pretty comprehensive list of adventure-games that have been published through the years. It also includes many Indie adventure-games. Some have only been published in German, but they're clearly marked (Sprache: D instead of Sprache: E)

colpet 10-23-2006 03:42 PM

A top 50 was done at JA. It was very difficult to rank 50, never mind the 141 games I've played.

Sotaria 10-23-2006 05:02 PM

In principle I like what you are trying to do, but the only way to REALLY do this right (which I have never been able to figure out how to do) is to have a polling system where you can vote A+ to F on every game you have ever played (but the games should be prelisted). It should possible to do this, but I doubt this site is set up for that and I don't know how to realistically do that in these forums. If you have any ideas I would love to help. People could just go check the game title and see what its average rating is.

AFGNCAAP 10-24-2006 12:58 AM

The point is not to have a simple average score for each game separately, though. Read the site Trumgottist linked to. Ranked pairs is a special algorithm of producing a list on which relative positions of games X and Y (ie. which is placed higher) are usually more influenced by people who played both X and Y than by the rest.

And I assume that Trumgottist have means to calculate the final rankings easily enough, or else he wouldn't offer to do it. :D

daikatana_ 10-24-2006 03:45 AM

Im thinking about making some script in php which could allow us all to "vote".
I havent read the site about those ranked pairs yet, so when i have some time, i will take a look and figure out some algorithm how to count the final score. Next good thing would be the possibility to enter more games even after you have voted if you forget some.

And actually, there wouldnt be a final score. I would keep the site up, so when some1 come up with more games or some new ppl come here, it will change the score...

I'm pretty sure Trumgottist has got a plan for this List already.

That's the easy part. (And yes, I have tools to help with the boring bits.) The hard part is what I suggested we all do. Assisted by the link PolloDiablo gave, I now have a file on my computer containing (at least most of) the adventure games I've played in a very rough order. The obvious things are in place, such as Simon3 > Simon2 > Simon1. But then comes the difficult part, and I haven't played as insanely many as some others here have. My list only contains 42 commercial games. (I think it's probably best to leave the freeware games out of this, or things will become even harder to compare.) I note there's only one of the games I find to be bad.

As AFGNCAAP points out, the idea was not to collect ratings for a large number of games, but more a variation on the "post your top games" threads. I thought of it since Sotaria was doing statistics on the most recent top-game thread. I found that interesting, but noted that simply adding scores is a blunt way of doing statistics. As an example, my personal top ten does not include any Space Quest games. Is that because I don't like those games? No, it's simply that I've never played them. I think it'd be interesting to see how the results of a ranked pair rating would compare. The large number of games thing sort of appeared as a requirement to do this sort of thing. It's pointless to apply the ranked pairs voting system to the top-ten thread (I'd have done that instead of starting a new thread if I thought that to be a good idea) - there's too little information in that thread to do it right.

I did not intend it to be anything more substantial than any other similar forum thread. Completely useless, but maybe a bit interesting. If anyone feels inspired to start some new rating site, or register at MobyGames and start rating they should feel free to do so, but that's another thing.

And for those of you that find it too hard to do: Group your list heavily. You could even do it as simply as splitting your list in two groups. "Games I like" and "Games I don't like". Or post the top ten you posted in the last thread and group the rest of the games together at the bottom. Those are completely valid approaches that will be handled appropriately when the results are put together.

Flyboy 10-24-2006 03:53 PM

Well since I've avoided posting on just about every other "rank your favorite games" list, I suppose this is as good a place as any to just give in and get it over with (and to get the ball rolling on this thread already).

Here we go, motherfuckers! Every goddamn adventure game I've played and finished, from heavenly to hellish:

Monkey Island 1
Day of the Tentacle
Quest for Glory 1
Monkey Island 3
Grim Fandango
Conquest of Camelot
Beneath a Steel Sky
The Dig
King's Quest 6
Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes
Quest for Glory 2
Monkey Island 2
Conquests of the Longbow
Gabriel Knight: Sins
Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis
Sam and Max: Hit the Road
Space Quest 3
Broken Sword 1
King's Quest 5
Loom
Dagger of Amon Ra
Space Quest 5
Rise of the Dragon
Sanitarium
Freddy Pharkas
Quest for Glory 3
Blade Runner
Heart of China
Full Throttle
Space Quest 1
Police Quest 2
Space Quest 4
Colonel's Bequest
King's Quest 4
King's Quest 1
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
Space Quest 6
Les Manley: Search for the King
Leisure Suit Larry 1
Adventures of Willy Beamish
Leisure Suit Larry 2
Police Quest 1
Altered Destiny
Toonstruck
Space Quest 2
Police Quest 3
King's Quest 2
Leisure Suit Larry 3
King's Quest 3
Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade
Monkey Island 4
Ween: The Prophecy
Codename: Iceman
Wayne’s World (dear god, why?)
Les Manley 2: Lost in LA (yes, it’s worse than Wayne’s World)

That's all I can think of for now. If I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat reminded of some long lost obscure game I played in the late 80s, I'll be sure to edit it into the list. For now though, this is pretty much it.

Wimli 10-25-2006 02:47 AM

Ok, I'll go secondly :):

These are the adventure games I've played from start to finish (I chose not to include the ones I may have played enough to be able to rate them. That rating would probably still change after finishing the game.):

From good to bad:

Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals
King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow
Broken Sword 1: Shadow of the Templars
Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Fathers
The Longest Journey
Sam & Max Hit the Road
King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella
Voyage
Gold Rush!
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Torin's Passage
Largo Winch: Empire Under Threat
Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail
Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror
Police Quest 1: In Pursuit of the Death Angel
Discworld 1
Laura Bow 1: The Colonel's Bequest
Rama
Leisure Suit Larry 6: Shape Up or Slip Out
The Curse of Monkey Island
Leisure Suit Larry 1: in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride
Shivers 1
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder
Starship Titanic
Police Quest 2: The Vengeance
Post Mortem
The 7th Guest
Zork Nemesis
Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls
Police Quest IV: Open Season
The Black Mirror
Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh
Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work
UFOs
Phantasmagoria 1
Grim Fandango
Syberia 1
The Moment of Silence
CSI 1
Still Life
Myst

If I were asked to give scores to these games, none of them would go below a 5/10, because games I don't think have anything (or very little) going for them, I simply don't finish. So even the bottom five are not all bad. They'll never be favourites though.

Wow, by quoting me you just went and doubled the use of the word "motherfuckers" in this thread. And now I've gone and tripled it. My bad.

Okay. This list includes only those I have completed or that were so bad I will NEVER finish them. There are many others that I have yet to finish, but may well do someday.
