I think they left the ending open so you could take your pick of endings. If they'd had an unhappy ending with David getting arrested, it would disappoint some players. If they had a happy ending where he gets back with his wife, that would disappoint different players. Since they left it open, players may debate the ending, but ultimately those with a strong preference can choose their own.
