Default Tads

I use TADS, a rival to Inform. It has basic support for graphics and sound, as welll. If you're looking for really easy, basic stuff you could use Adrift, but it's
$10(19.85 british) for the full version, while TADS, Inform, and others are free.
I'd reccommend TADS, as it's quite similer to C and Pascal, and if you want your kids to grow up to be master proggramers like yourself, you should(I think) get them started on TADS.
