best adventure system?
I'm looking to choose a text adventure system for my first text adventure ( actually not my first but last time I wrote one of these was ~25 years ago on the ZX spectrum!!!)
Ideally I want it to be mostly text based, and fairly quick and easy to setup. The main aim is to set up mini adventures to play along with my kids. But it would be nice to choose something that is extensible should i have the time to add basic graphics and sound etc, but not as a neccessity. I'm an experienced progammer, but would rather choose something simplish so that my 5 yr old son can set them up too. So what is suited to me? What do most people use? Sorry if this is already answered in another thread, I'm sure you will be used to this sort of question! Thanks, Spurtus. |

I'm guessing the standard these days is the Inform system.

I think we mod are able to modify your username.
If you have a suggestion, I'll try to modify it right away.

For text only, you could easily program a browser game.
I've been playing around with a scumm-like engine that works in browsers (no flash/silverlight) and it it surprisingly doable, so a text-only game should easily work. |

I'd like to see the 5 year old that can set up a text adventure in any other kind of engine.
Though I could have read that he's a programmer and he'd know about the obvious languages.

- It's hybrid text and graphics, using text-to-speech. - As an experienced programmer you'll have no problem. Your 5-year old would need you at the keyboard to translate english into code, to run the IDE, and the 3D world modeller. Last edited by Dale Baldwin; 01-22-2009 at 04:10 AM. Tads
I use TADS, a rival to Inform. It has basic support for graphics and sound, as welll. If you're looking for really easy, basic stuff you could use Adrift, but it's
$10(19.85 british) for the full version, while TADS, Inform, and others are free. I'd reccommend TADS, as it's quite similer to C and Pascal, and if you want your kids to grow up to be master proggramers like yourself, you should(I think) get them started on TADS. |

Well, since you got yourself some Speccy experience, why not try the PAW or the Quill?
