Be honest (but helpfully so) with everyone you can. There will be times when you have to decide whether to tell someone the whole brutal truth, knowing full well that it may do more harm than good. Times like those, you should be honest, but keep in mind that sometimes, being helpful is better. Stick to the truth that best helps the situation. Give them the information that will help them make an informed but positive decision for themselves. Telling him (or her) that his partner is a lying, cheating sleaze might seem like the right thing to do. However, suggesting he might be better off with someone more his type would probably help everyone a lot more, and lead to fewer incarcerations.
Be brutally honest with yourself. However, the same principal does not go for yourself. You must be scrupulously honest with yourself about everything, because you'll never forgive yourself a lie, and you'll pay for your own folly in time.
