Animated userpics (as well as those famous Spinny Gifs, but that's another kettle of fish) can be quite amusing, done well. I have one myself that my wife made for me. However, they're usually made by folks who aren't terribly good at design, are generally hard to read (where reading is required), and as Squinky points out, can be very distracting in a rather obnoxious way.

That doesn't change the fact that internet-loving people can and will use animations when and as often as possible. It comes under the heading of 'Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you should'. Most animated userpics are fannish, convoluted, badly timed, and hard to ignore when you're trying to read relevant information elsewhere on the same screen.

Whereas, Squinky's very clever icon has already besotted samIamsad, and it didn't even need to wink at him. A very effective choice of userpic, I'd say.
