It's not a remake, it's a film version of the musical.
And, as the clips I've seen from the musical were far more amusing than the abysmal original effort, I think it's a good thing

Seriously, though, I never found the original film as funny as everyone kept saying it was, but I saw some excerpts from the musical and loved it.
