I agree with the sentiment - but I detest shorthand ("u", "r", "2") far more than I detest even the oddest acronyms ("lol", "roflmfao", "omg"). Former is just taking a word that is already short ("you", "are", "too"/"two"/"to") and shortening it further, whereas latter is shortening things like "laughing out loud", "rolling on the floor laughing my f*cking ass off", "oh my gosh"... okay, so "omg" is annoying.
Really, it depends on the amount of disrespect someone has for the language. "LOL" to me is a more accurate representation of "laughing out loud", paticularily if it is done briefly and suddenly, which it normally is in my case. It seems to suit a "haha!" more than the written out version does.
Or I've just grown up with "lol" too much and am looking for excuses.
