Simple question about Scumm VM for Mac.

To run something like Broken Sword on Scumm VM, all I would require is the disc itself and the program? It seems like it would require something extra.

That's all you need. :) Install the game. Run SCUMM and Add Game. Look in the appropriate directory (you have to double click the drive letter to expand it), find you game and click on it. Run and enjoy. :)

What operating system do you have btw?

Edit: I'm not sure Broken Sword would run on SCUMMVM. Someone else will have to answer that.

No, it's not supported for Mac.

I'm a dork. I didn't read the whole title of his thread and missed the Mac part.

Doh!

Yoo hoo! Mac people? :):)

Actually, it's just a teensy bit more complex than what Melanie first said. :) See this thread.

Nah. :D That's what works for most games that run on ScummVM, you had no reason to guess that it wouldn't be exactly the case for BS1 if you hadn't tried it.

Anyway, I've adopted fov's philosophy for as long as I've been posting here:

And you really should go on doing that too, that part of the forum would be boring otherwise. :)

Hey, now. As long as I can walk someone else through it, who cares if I understand it myself?! :D

EDIT: Jake's ScummVM tutorial for Macs is one of the best threads ever. ;) Except it doesn't change the fact that Broken Sword is apparently not supported on the Mac. :(

What do you mean, not supported on the Mac? The readme reads "Macintosh version is not supported", which means that the Mac version of the game won't run with ScummVM (but, then, it should work natively on a Mac, OS X has good backward support...); but the PC version of the game (which is what most people have and is what is still sold nowadays) will run using the Mac version of ScummVM.
Have I lost everybody here, or is that remotely clear?

I was just regurgitating what Dale said. I didn't actually click on his link. ;)

I know Mac versions of some SCUMM games can be played on a PC using ScummVM. Does it work the other way around? If so, then Broken Sword (PC version) should work on a Mac using ScummVM. I guess. :P

My original question. I hope it can be answered. :frown:

Did you check the thread fov linked to in her earlier post?

As has been said earlier in the thread, the PC version of Broken Sword can be played on a Mac. However, the Mac version of the game isn't supported by ScummVM.

You need to download new video files for the PC version. From the readme of ScummVM:
Quote:

3.3) Broken Sword notes
---- ------------------
Broken Sword 1 and 2 both come with in-game cutscenes compressed using
RAD Game Tools legacy Smacker(tm) format. As RAD is unwilling to open
the older legacy versions of this format to us, and have requested we not
reverse engineer it, Revolution Software has kindly allowed us to provide
re-encoded Broken Sword cutscenes for download on our website.

These cutscenes are provided in MPEG2 format with OGG Vorbis audio.
Viewing these cutscenes thus requires a version of ScummVM compiled
with both libmpeg2 (preferably 0.4.0 or greater) and libVorbis support.

The cutscenes should be placed in the main game data directory. Note that
currently this requires either copying the game to harddisk or reburning
customised versions of the game CDs.

Awesome! Maybe now I can finally replay one of my favorite games of all time with high quality voiceovers, FMVS, graphics, and music! I was unfornate to have only played the GBA version, but I'm really hoping this will soon change that. :D Funny thing is, I found the GBA version extremely impressive even without all the snazzy features of the PC version, so I can only imagine how great this version will be.
