Long overdue, in my opinion. ;)

Casino Royale - I thought it was alright, but not something I'm particularly interested in watching again. Nothing noteworthy in the movie for me.

That reminds me... Many years ago I got into an argument with a guy about whether or not the gauge of quality for a movie is one feeling a desire to watch it again. I lost that argument, but I won't tell which side I was on. ;) I have since converted to the other side.

By the way, having noticed your avatar, I must say... Go Peyton Manning? Nah, go Tony Romo! :P Just messin' with ya.

I finally saw PT Anderson's "Boogie Nights," which I thought was a pretty decent movie. Doesn't have the raw emotional power of "Magnolia," but parts of it are fun. I particularly like Julianne Moore's character. How she can make this adult film actress into the virgin mother is beyond my powers of description. Do you guys like PT Anderson? I think he's probably one of the best American filmmakers working today.

I think he's talented mostly because of Magnolia, which is, if anything, underrated. Boogie Nights is stylistically cool and has some decent character stuff, but I was in a bit of shock when the drug scene devolved into a slow mo, John Woo gun battle...

Spiwak 11-20-2006 07:28 PM

PT Anderson lover right here. Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love - love 'em. Boogie Nights is great but it is admittedly a bit immature. I'm anxiously awaiting There Will Be Blood, because as much as I like his movies to date (seen 'em all) I think four movies is not enough to fully judge a director. Hopefully his later career plays out as well as his beginning.

Also, he sets quite an example for young directors everywhere. Even though he did have a lot of money to start with.

Terabin 11-20-2006 10:13 PM

I haven't seen Hard Eight yet. Where does that rank for you guys with respect to Anderson's work? And yes, Spiwak, I think you're right to say that we don't have the full picture of Anderson yet. Still, it's hard to disagree with the three wonderful movies that I've seen. Very distinctive filmmaker.

Robert Altman, acclaimed director of MASH, Nashville, Gosford Park and The Player, has died at the age of 81, his production company has announced.

:frown: :frown:

Oh no! Man, that is the worst news I've heard in a while. :\

I would like to mention two other films he made that are among my favorites of his work: Short Cuts and McCabe and Mrs. Miller

Spiwak 11-21-2006 01:00 PM

Yea it's horrible. A guy that's still making movies and making pretty good movies at that. Altman will be missed....

Spiwak 11-22-2006 12:06 PM

Why do only three people on this board give a shit?

Terabin 11-22-2006 01:05 PM

I give a shit! My goodness, the guy had a unique way of handling characters and dialogue. He put the American stamp on the ensemble film. He is the sort of director that one references with his last name and "-esque" added onto it. Altman-esque. Not many directors get that sort of distinction! He will be sorely missed, and he was definitely still making good movies.

fixed.

I read about his death and thought it was sad but I wasn't terribly surprised. He was 81 and in poor health and I moved on. I am sure that there have been people who have died that have really affected me that you may have not even given a shit about either (and it's not that I don't care but I've moved on already-sue me). But I am not you. And it pisses me off when someone tries to guilt me into trying to feel what they do. So please knock it off. You want to mourn, I am not criticizing you for doing so but please don't complain because people aren't feeling the way you do.

Maquisard 11-22-2006 05:08 PM

I'd say we do give a shit (a thimblefull of shit in my case), but don't necessarily feel about it strongly enough to need the catharsis of talking about it on these boards, or anywhere, for that matter. For me, it was a "Huh, someone famous died. Wonder if his movies were any good, maybe I should check them out." kind of reaction.

Hmmm... I think, perhaps, you took his comment too seriously Melanie. :P I don't think he meant it's wrong to say nothing or feel, relatively, nothing. I think his point was that on this particular board, where movies are the topic, it seems a bit surprising that more haven't offered a reaction. After all, Altman was considered one of the greatest living American filmmakers. The subject of this thread is what inspired that post by Spiwak, as Altman recently had a new film released. I don't believe he meant to offend anyone.

I took the comment the way it felt like it was meant to me - seriously. If it was only meant jokingly, I have a difficult time reading that in some people. I wouldn't have said anything even though the original post ticked me off but when Terabin replied - 'I give a shit' followed by Spiwak's correcting of his own post, that's when I decided to say something because it felt like it was a serious comment to me. Also, whatever Spiwak meant, he's the only one who knows for sure. And Spiwak's post was inspired by Lucien's who posted on his death to begin with (which I obviously had no problem with). That's all I'm going to say about it.

I saw Casino Royale today. Pretty good film, a definite departure, in terms of structure, from previous entries.

Boondock Saints - Own it, have seen it many times. My mom wanted to see it, so I brought it to her house and we watched it.

X-Men 3: The Last Stand - Saw it at the theatres the day it came out. Got it for my birthday from my mom, watched it with my cousin.

Casino Royale - Saw it today with my grandpa, and 3 of my cousins.

April Fools Day - My cousin wanted me to watch it, so I did.

^ Most movies aren't worth watching alone. :)
