Ooh, good fun. Won't fit in your current theme of server names, but I've always been a sucker for things like "Hyacinth", "Chrome" or "Anthracite". Especially the last one. :D

Yes, I hate to say it, but I did enjoy the TV series Ocean Girl/Ocean Odyssey (I dive the way she does, but I have been diving that way long before that TV show was ever broadcast.) a lot.

Come to think of it, I liked a lot of the Australian Children's serials. They always were very creative, I think. Apart from "Ocean Girl" I also enjoyed "Escape from Jupiter" and "Return to Jupiter", I enjoyed "Spellbinder" whenever I managed to catch it (which rarely happened, so I was unable to keep track of the plot. I remember that at one time one character that I remembered being kind of one of the bad guys ended up having to side with the good guys, because she was kind of betrayed or something. At least that's how I understood it, though I can't be sure that's correct. After all I had missed several episodes between those two episodes.), "Thunderstone" was lots of fun (though I also lost track of it if I missed a few episodes), and I've always enjoyed "Mission Top Secret" (I used to call it "Centauri Team", although the German title was "Achtung: Streng Geheim", which translates as "Warning: Top Secret".), even though I doubt I ever saw all of them (maybe one day. Also, the villain of this TV series, Neville Savage, is the reason why I needed some time to get used to the character Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter books. "Neville" was a villain to me, but there is Neville Longbottom, who is as far away from being a villain as you can get.)

Oooh! And "The Curiosity Show" was great, with it dubbing that leaves no doubt that it is dubbed, but still soooo great! :)

Been having a bit more of a think. If you're stuck with naming for a while maybe you want to start a theme you can run with for the next few as well.

Maybe a literary theme,

• Some of the Coronals of Majipoor(Robert Silverberg) - Prestimion, Stiamot, Valentine, Confalume.
  
• Lord of the Rings - Frodo, Samwise, Pippin, Merry
  
• Harry Potter - Harry, Hermione, Ron, Malfoy
  
• Deities of Discworld (Terry Pratchett) - Nuggan, Om, Anoia, Offler

But another approach occurred to me. Since you want to name a server, what about people who serve? I thought of two main approaches here

• Sportspeople - Henman, Ivanisevic, Murray, Navratilova, King, Capriati
  
• Serving people (Butlers,barpeople, etc) - Jeeves, Crichton, Lurch, Manuel, Passepartout, Guinan

Hope you're not getting overwhelmed by everyone's ideas bysmitty. :D

Australian television always did seem to have a bit of a monopoly on creative children's programming, especially the sci-fi stuff. There was so much of it on BBC1 that I used to think (for some reason) that the BBC paid them to make it - but I guess they just found a genre that sold well overseas and stuck with it. Sounds like they were successful in Germany too. :P

Here is a fact: the only German children's programme I have knowingly watched was called 'The Little Vampire', but only because I'd read the books. The dubbing was worse than awful - I don't suppose it's a challenge that English broadcasters face very often!

Yeah, sorry about the tangent. You should call the server Alana in honour of The Girl From Tomorrow.

As for "Chemale"... definitely not. If you pronounce that name by English-language norms (as 99% of Americans would) you get something rather naughty and I don't think the office would go in for it. :)

I do think "theme" names are a good idea, so the naming problem won't be as bad in the future. As stepurhan said, literature would probably be the best way to go. Of course, what you choose is all a matter of whether you want people in the office asking you to explain the choice of name or not. They probably will, for example, if you choose something odd like "Guybrush." ;)

If you're considering themes, would adventure game character names be too obvious to suggest?

If you choose to go with a theme, I propose Baywatch. The file server could be called Mitch.

I know, that's another reason I don't suggest it. (I actually pronounce "Tché-mal" with a silent "e". The more common English spelling seems to be "Schamali", and the full name is actually "Zubeneschamali" or "Zuben-el-Schemali" or "Zubeneschemali". The full name means "Northern Claw", and is one of the stars of the constellation "Libra" (I'm assuming that the "Chemale/Schamali" part means "Northern", because "Zubenelgenubi" means "Southern Claw".). I write it "Chemale" because in my Astronomy book it was written "Zubenel=Chemale", with a hypen between the two words, and each word on a different line, since the book is s pocket edition. That's where I first saw it, and that's also why I use that spelling.
