What is risk? ive always wondered about that...it sounds something like what an rts would be as a board game

I just bought the Scene It DVD game (Disney edition) for my nieces. They have other editions as well.

The question is, do you really want to spend several hours learning how to actually play Risk? ;)

I'm quite partial to Upwords myself. Like Scrabble, only different :).

simpson_yellow 12-14-2005 05:04 PM

Board games aren't really my thing but Upwords is quite entertaining - far less tiresome than Scrabble.

And Pictionary, Balderdash and Taboo are all really good for a laugh (if you have at least four players).

Karmillo 12-14-2005 06:39 PM

We had Cranium for a while, that was a great game but being something like 4 or more games rolled into one it took a good few hours to complete, since you never moved untill you completed a task  my family just eventualy refused to play it with me :(

I guess risk is out of the question then, since you say it takes a while to learn it would be a nightmare trying to teach everyone how to play :frusty:

I liked Cranium -- good group game. There was one game my friend had that I've never since been able to find. It's called Moods. The trick is you would have a phrase, like "There's gold in them thar hills" and you would pick a card out of several cards with a particular mood (like sexy, or impish, or jealous, or angry). You would have to read that phrase in that mood, and then everyone would vote on what mood they thought you'd read the phrase in. It was hilarious, and I'm bummed I've never been able to find that game again.

Here it is but man is it expensive. They obviously don't make them anymore.

SoccerDude28 12-14-2005 07:40 PM

Risk best board game ever.

I don't think Taboo can be considered a board game. Personally, I think a lot of these so-called "classics" are overrated. I mean, take Monopoly. It's almost entirely luck! When we used to play, we'd throw in all sorts of mergers and complicated deals, but the game itself is really boring.

Has anyone here ever played "Twixt"? Now that's a good game, and I'm not sure if it's even being sold anymore.

simpson_yellow 12-15-2005 12:06 AM

Whether Taboo is technically a board game or not, it's still a barrel of laughs with the right company. And it's played in the same kind of setting and situations as any board game, so I reckon it near enough qualifies.

And yes, Monopoly has to be one of the most tedious games in existence. I've never understood the appeal.

No. I challenge you to visit a game store in Germany or Austria and sustain that. Or browse the excellent page Lucien linked to.

Risk has easy rules. Lacey is just not as perfect as he believes. :P You have one type of unit and all battles are resolved by throwing the dices.

Incidentally, Diplomacy, though may be confused with Risk at first glance, is superior, because it's based on negotiations and alliances, with no randomness whatsoever. The painful drawback is that it needs as much as seven players and is terribly time-consuming (I've never played a game of Diplomacy till the end, in fact :D). And avoid both its computer conversions like a plague.

The Settlers of Catan is one of the best board games I've played. Worth checking.
