"Bestowers of Eternity" team is looking for sprite animators

Greetings all!

Progress on this game is moving ahead slowly but surely, and we are in need of some more sprite animators to speed things along. We currently have a system in place where one person designs the sprites and someone else animates them. This has worked out well because are able to keep the style consistent while having more than one animator work on the game.

If anyone out there is willing or able to animate sprites in this style, please drop me a line.

Keep in mind we are only looking for sprite ANIMATORS. We are not looking for designers at this stage. Thanks!

The last I heard BoE had turned into a commercial production, and looking at the quality of these new character shots in comparison to the original free BoE Part 1 (though those weren't bad either), it certainly seems that it will be worth it.

The smoking sprite kind of freaks me out when I stare at it for too long based on the fact that the cigarette must be infinite, and that she drags so frequently on it.

AHHHH!!!

I thought that was an April's Fool joke? Man, we need an April 2nd debrief!

That second sprite has finally managed to convince me that smoking is cool. :7

This is, in fact, correct. This has been a news item on my web site for some time. You can go to http://www.davelgil.com and scroll down a bit for more information.

Except for the fact that the girl doesn't draw breath unless there's cigarette smoke mixed with the air (I.E. she draws way too often), I'd say it looks cool too. :D

Yeah, besides; making an adventure game is hard work and very time consuming.

I wouldn't usually mind paying for a game made by Dave Gilbert as he as already proven himself to be an excellent developer. However I'm concerned that I'm going to have to pay for a game which I've already played half of for free. In my opinion, I think Dave should make the second part for free and then make a different original commercial game. I wouldn't have any problems paying for it then. Anyway good luck with the game.

It's going to be commercial due to the extreme amount of work everyone's been putting into the game (Dave setting a great example). I can assure everyone that the final product will be worth it, as the game is shaping up to be very good.

That being said, anyone willing to help animate would be soooo appriciated!

I have no doubt it will be good and I know you must be putting in a lot of work. All I'm saying is that you have already made the first part for free, so why not the second one? You could make it the same standard as the first part without improving graphics or using voice actors or working too hard on it. In other words, you don't have to make it "commercial quality". Clearly you are putting a lot of hard work into the game and I wish you all the best with it. I wouldn't usually have a problem paying for the game as you have no doubt put a lot of time and effort into it and I want to support developers like yourselves and I also wouldn't usually mind paying if talented and proven developers like yourselves made the game. But I'm not sure if I would pay for a game I've already played half of for free. Just, in my opinion, if the first part is for free then I think the second part should be free as well. I also think that if you want to go commercial, then you should start with an original game instead. Again, just my humble opinion. I really hope I'm proved wrong when this game is released. I hope you don't take any offense to these comments as I have already said that I have a lot of respect for Dave and his team and I hope you have a lot of success with this and any other game you make in the future. :)

I know Dave has been reworking Part 1, going over the plot and puzzles to see how to improve them. So I suspect that you won't have "played half of" the full game when it's released. Besides, this time around it's going to be much, much prettier! ;)

How much of the game does the bit that was originally released account for, anyway? My impression was that it was only a small part, somewhere between a quarter and a tenth of the full game, perhaps. It seemed like the story was just getting started.

I'd love to help out with animation, but I'm tragically deficient in the skill department.

BerserkerTails 05-31-2005 06:04 PM

Well, I don't know what Dave planned when he originally created the first part of Bestowers of Eternity, but I know he's told me that the new BoE that we're working on (Of which I've read the entire Design Document, and is amazing) is quite different from what he was planning originally.

That doesn't mean that fans of the original BoE Part 1 won't find a few things similar, hehe.

Well, this new version of BoE we're currently working on is vary different from the BoE that you've played already. Though most of what was in Part I is also in this version, the changes are significant enough to call it a new game, in my opinion.

I do know that there were going to be more that just two parts of the original BoE, so you haven't played half of it yet. Based on the current design document, I'd say Part 1 would encompass about 1/8th of the entire game, maybe less.

Pharmboy 06-01-2005 08:04 AM

I never played the first part, but I have fiddled with Two of a Kind and Dave's (plus the team's, natch) skill is very evident. I don't have any sort of an issue with him remaking his game and trying to sell it. For one thing, it's his intellectual property anyway.

For two, look at those character sprites. Sweeeet.

My only request would be to unlock a commentary by the designer and co at the end to: a) enhance replayability and b) add extra value for money. I just put that in because Yahtzee did it with 5 Days and 7 Days and both were excellent, excellent add-ons.

Leo 06-01-2005 02:31 PM

Now I'm more reassured. Why did I think there was two parts? I thought it said somewhere that it was the "first of two parts". Guess I read wrong. Anyway this new piece of info gives me more hope. Now it won't be like I've already played half of the game and hopefully it will longer. Anyway, I feel a lot better hearing what you have to say so I eagearly anticipate new updates.

BerserkerTails 06-01-2005 05:46 PM

Leo: I'm glad to hear that you're reassured. And believe me, we'll start letting more people know about the progress of the game shortly. There's been a few rumours kicking around that people at certain AGS annual gatherings might get to see a bit of what we've been working on...

And Pharmboy, the director's commentary is a great thing. I know Dave has saved all work he's done on all the versions of BoE, and we've talked a few times about some special "making-of" features on the disc before. Things like this:

That's the original concept picture for Joey, drawn by Dave in MSPaint three years ago when he first came up with the concept. I can assure you, having seen the new Joey sprite in action, that he looks a lot different now, haha.
