Amateur daring to dream

My all-time favourite game was the beautiful 1st person adventure 'Dare To Dream' and I would like to design a game like that, but all the places that have game development kits and such only work with sprite-based adventures with 'walktalktakelook' systems... :frusty: I am not sure what to do. People instructed me to come here, and here I am.

:frown:

I'm not seeing alot of info on this game. What was the gameplay like? There are no sprites? So was it like Myst?
PS. I can't believe Unreal's CliffyB used to make adventure games :)

If you really want to play Dare to Dream. and you can't find the demo online, then I can dig out an old covermount...

I'm using Sludge, and I can say for certain that a first person adventure is very much possible to create with it. It's no more difficult than making a normal 3rd person one, probably easier. I haven't experimented enough with the other systems to say anything about how they would handle a 1st person game, but I'd guess that at least Agast also would cope with it.

Ursamoon 02-19-2004 02:00 PM

Yah but I already downloaded three different "simple" ones that claimed they could, and none of them can, or it was insanely difficult and had no documentation whatsoever simply because that wasn't what it was "meant" for....

hmmm....

Trumgottist 02-19-2004 02:27 PM

Well, if you decide to try Sludge I can promise you all the help you need to get a first-person interface going.

Ursamoon 02-19-2004 04:48 PM

Really?
Great!
I'll go check it out, but when I went to the SLUDGE site it was almost incomprehensible at first....

I'll check that. :)

Ursamoon 02-19-2004 04:51 PM

And to LaceyWare-
Would that be possible?

I have looked all over and even though it is just shareware I still can't get it...

:frusty:

No ;).

Well, seeing as you asked so nicely...

/rummages around on an old covermount...

If the link doesn't work, let me know. If the file is faulty, let me know. If the game doesn't work, I can't help you ;)...

Heh, that might be slightly shady on these forums... ;)

God send, LaceyWare. I'll still order a copy and see if it comes in from overseas.

None the less, I think a D2D fan-game would be sweet. I remember it being kind of Visual Basicy, but I think with SLUDGE you could do some neat tricks, maybe make it look a little more contemporary and what not. Perhaps even full screen! ;)

If you need any help, let me know.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm gonna try SLUDGE and I will come back if I need help... :pan:
probably pretty soon. :P

Ursamoon 02-23-2004 03:48 PM

Oh, and to LaceyWare-

Thank you very very very much...

I love this game. I will be sure to reply if there is any problem. :) :) :) :spam: :) :) :)

Aren't there engines specifically for first-person games, like the following?

That piece of software was built when SCRAMM was still on-line. It's been around for a loooong time, yet I never met anyone who've used it. I don't know if there's a lot of support behind this engine...

I tried it once, I believe, and I cried when I used it.

Squinky 04-20-2004 10:43 AM

LOL, figures. Then stick with SLUDGE.

(I did once make an experimental first-person interface with it. It even had 360-degree panoramic scenes...)

With AGS it's easy to make 1st person games as well. Just in case anybody was wondering. Come on, don't deny it; you Sludgers totally wish you were cool enough to use AGS. :D

P.S. Sludge is cool. I just enjoy creating rivalry.

Wormsie 05-01-2004 01:58 AM

AGS is for masochists. That said, I have recently started using it.
