Just Like Monkey Island (new Adventure Developers article, like whoa!)

So, I've recently been put in charge of the feature section over at Adventure Developers, and I thought you folks might be interested in a little article I just posted therein:

When I discovered the wonderful world of amateur adventure game development, all I wanted to do was make a game that was just like Monkey Island.

Well, okay, not just like Monkey Island. Unlike a number of people, I had no intention of writing a fan-made sequel or anything silly like that. From the start, I know I wanted to do something of my very own. Something original. But back then, I don't think I was quite sure what that something was. All I knew was that I wanted to make a game that made me feel the same way as I did when I played Monkey Island.

are your games available for download? I enjoyed playing MI very much (yup, even the fourth game in the series) so I'd love to try your games as well.

Monkey Island (specifically the 3rd) was a huge influence for me, and that feeling I got when I played it is something I'm also hoping players will experience with my game. But, like you, I don't just want to recreate that game, I want to make something new and different. I'll only know for sure if I've accomplished that when it's done and people can play it.

MI3 is definitely one of the best 3 adventures I played, and I played them a whole lot :)

Graphics, humor, the most idiotic characters ever, soundtrack, puzzles, and the list goes on...

Oh yeah... and the feathery-tar creature :D

If you're going to be moonlighting at AD, does that mean I can take over your position as AG's resident hottie? ;)

I didn't know you wanted to be chased by 82-year-old men that badly.

Monkey Island 3 was a visual pace-setter and inspiration for the 2D adventure games made since, whether professional or amateur. The art style embodied the spirit of the game visually, not an easy thing to do. It chucked realism out the window and went with soul, funk, and style, and it hit the goal. The cinematics were also mind-blowing. (How the heck did they do that intro cutscene? :P)

Monkey Islands 1 and 2 nailed the dialogue and narrative by presenting the story through interaction and immersion through dialogue. So the series accounts for a good deal of what's made today. I can't think of any other game that did as wonderful a job at storytelling and gameplay presentation, except BioShock. (And you can't get better than BioShock.) In other words, agreed.
