Nearly Departed...zombie adventure

I'm assuming this is an amateur game, but maybe they have bigger plans? Anyway, it's being made with LASSIE, and there is a single screenshot. See it here:

Title: Nearly Departed

Overview: You emerge from a grave, apparently a zombie with amnesia, and have to solve the mystery of your demise while resisting your craving for BRAINS!
There's a 2nd game listed called "What Makes You Tick?"

They both look good.

Legolas813 10-28-2005 03:50 PM

The online playable demo thing was pretty good, though I was kind of disappointed that it ended up being an advertisement for LASSIE.

Orange Brat 10-28-2005 08:35 PM

Of course it's an advertisement for LASSIE...it's the official LASSIE full talkie demo hosted on the LASSIE website.

Hamham Chan 10-29-2005 02:18 PM

Finally a zombie adventure game!:)

This looks REALLY good!

bigjko 11-01-2005 03:53 AM

This LASSIE engine, although in its early stages, doesn't sound so bad.

Indeed. It's an interesting engine for sure. I hope it'll be popular with indie developers, as the games are platform independent and all.

The picture looks ok, but the bit on the back right is bugginh me.

The wall and crypt are far too tilted to one side. It's distracting and looks wrong somehow.

melancholick 11-03-2005 01:19 PM

Yeah, the perspective is goofy. The tilt should be in the foreground rather than the background.

Candle 11-03-2005 02:20 PM

Can't please everyone.

Orange Brat 11-03-2005 02:26 PM

I see what you're talking about, but it doesn't bother me because it fits into the wonky stylized art style category and can get away with it. Plus, I don't think it's that bad to begin with...just crazy undulating ground.

Iceadventure 11-03-2005 02:48 PM

Is it possible to get through the grating in the playable demo.

JohnGreenArt 11-05-2005 03:32 PM

Hello, all!

I didn't think there'd be any threads started about my project anywhere yet. I'm thrilled to see there's interest this early.

Yes, it is an amateur game. I'm currently just working on it in my spare time as a hobby. No release plans have been set just yet, though I just about have the first two rooms done.

I put up a quick website where I'll post images and updates. There are just two screenshots, and the site is pretty barebones. Maybe I'll make the site better at some point, but right now any extra time I have is going toward the game itself.

Anyway, this is my first point & click game (and my first computer game in over ten years) so I hope when it's done everyone will find it worthwhile.

Thanks again,
John "I *brain* Zombies" Green

It's a lovely, little website John. I personally think there's not much more needed. It says everything that needs to be said. Just needs more game to show off! :D ;)

But, like everyone's already said, this looks totally awesome. Really gets me psyched that we're gonna be playin' zombies in adventure games, finally! Great job, man.

Hamham Chan 11-06-2005 09:18 PM

Good luck with your game, John.:)

JohnGreenArt 11-20-2005 09:42 PM

I made a small update to my site to add a couple more screenshots and character animations, if anyone's interested:

Looks great.

Keep up the good work.

Orange Brat 02-16-2006 01:03 AM

There's a 15-MB, pre-release demo available for either the Mac or Windows. The final/full version of the game will feature full speech, but that is not available in the demo version. Nice game...can't wait for the final product which will be available via Pinhead Games.

There's also an interview at Adventure Europe:

Kolzig 02-17-2006 12:30 AM

This game looks really good, it has very cool graphics. :)

JohnGreenArt 02-17-2006 07:26 AM

Thanks!

buloght 02-17-2006 12:40 PM

hey john! This looks amazing! Please stick with it.

Karmillo 02-17-2006 04:28 PM

Just finished the demo and really liked it :D

the puzzles were good and moslty logical...though
Spoiler:
I couldnt see the logic in sticking the gum covered hairpin in the crypt door and then using the shovel shards on it...

JohnGreenArt 02-17-2006 05:06 PM

Heh heh. Yeah, some puzzles might be a bit different in the final game. At least just so people who played the demo don't have to go through exactly the same things again.

Karmillo 02-17-2006 05:48 PM

Ooh goody :D

Hamham Chan 02-18-2006 01:30 PM

Awesome demo!
I love the part where
Spoiler:
you eat the bum, and that you have to pour tabasco on him first.
:D

JohnGreenArt:
Do you like horrormovies? How about including references to different zombiemovies in your game?:)

I´m really looking forward to the finished game.I would even be willing to pay for it.

usman 02-18-2006 10:45 PM

This game looks very good and equal to quality standards of any commercial release.

There are few points I must raise regarding the game.

1.) The Game Runs in 800 X 600 Resoultion, so there should be an option before starting the game is included so the game resizes it self for Full Screen.

2.) Dialogs speed are some how relatively slow.

Its an outclass effort and I really appreciate it. Please dont quit the project in the middle as it usually been happen with various projects and please take it to the end :)

How much work has been finished and what will be the expected date of release ?

Thanks and keep up the good work. (Thumbs Up)

JohnGreenArt 02-18-2006 11:05 PM

Hamham Chan: I do like some horror movies, zombie films specifically, and there may be a sly reference to a few here and there in the final game. There will be sly references to lot of things, actually.

usman:

1) The demo will only run in 800 x 600 but there will be a full screen option for the final game.

2) The dialog is slow just because there's no actual voices in place. The final game will have full voices, and once there is the text will pass at the speed the recorded voice does. As it is now, you can click the mouse to skip through dialog.

I'm glad you like the game, thanks for the compliments. As for the date of release, it's really too soon to estimate right now.

usman 02-18-2006 11:15 PM

Thanks JohnGreenArt for the info. Best of Luck with the remaining game :)

the gnome 02-19-2006 01:33 AM

The links seem (quite) dead (down?)... Perhaps they've gone on a walk... Anybody else having problems?

JohnGreenArt 02-19-2006 10:46 AM

Which link is dead?

jjacob 02-27-2006 07:06 PM

Downloaded the demo and tried to play, but it didn't work, won't launch, or will but shows nothing (it's visibly active in the XP taskbar, but there's no window), I've tried waiting, more waiting, closing it and launching again, but to no avail. Too bad, looks to be an awesome game.

JohnGreenArt 02-27-2006 09:03 PM

jjacob - what file are you loading? I've tested on both Windows and Mac, so it should work. Unless it unzipped incorrectly or something.

jjacob 02-28-2006 07:22 AM

"Nearly Departed_Win.exe", but it's working now for some reason (or rather it wasn't yesterday for some reason). Thanks anyway, I'll have some time later on to play, looking forward to it, looks awesome :)

Frogacuda 02-28-2006 06:01 PM

Interview over at Got Next if anyone cares.

makidoo 03-12-2006 03:34 AM

Another brand new interview here, if anyone cares too...! :)

usman 03-12-2006 08:26 AM

This game surely proves to be the one on which Adventure Fans keeps eye open. I just hope that it will finish soon and gamers get a chance to play and enjoy :)

PsychoGoatee 03-14-2006 07:20 PM

This game looks fantastic. Zombies rule. Keep up the good work. :D
