Oh, and don't listen to Ninth, he's just making things up. ;) That damn monkey was called Jojo in the French version too. I ought to know, my Dad found it sooo funny that the pianist we had been expecting since part 1 and that bore the same name as me (well, that would be a nickname for me) was actually a monkey --- you have no idea how long he teased me about that (senile old man). :D This puzzle gets another 3 :r's from me for that. :shifty:

Well, to my credit, he should have been called Manny! Not that it would have helped me much in any case, because I didn't even think of putting the... thing on the... other thing in order to... well... Nevermind.

Are you called Jerome? Or Joseph? I might have missed that.

Still Life seems to be cropping up a lot here. I've been stuck on the door puzzle when you get to the Red Lantern for a week now. My girlfriend did it on her first go. What the hell is that all about? :frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

I didn't save either cos i'm going to do it if it kills me (and it might!)

Space Quest 6 had many puzzles that were very pathetic. If I wasen't in love with the series I would of hated SQ6 if it didn't have the history of 5 games, and the narrator really saved the entire game.

Neither am I, but I knew what the signs were (I mean, I had seen them before in many horoscopes in newpapers), and I would have thought (wrongly) that everybody else did. Which is probably what the puzzles designers thought too. Of course, beta testing should have showed them that it wasn't the case.

I totally agree! I even didn't get it when I had the answer right in front of me in a walkthrough. Now THAT'S when a puzzle is insane!

Dammit, I had completely whiped that part of the game from my memory.

Well, none of the newspapers I read use the old symbolism anymore.

12 pages of discussion but no one mentioned the puzzle that will definitely get the title of champion by all who crossed paths with it!
I'm talking about the ending puzzle of Simon 3D,

where you have to open a computer's CD-ROM drive and reboot it with the disc you have in your inventory, and the way to do it is to physically open your own computer's CD-ROM drive (yes! press it's button with your finger) and the drive inside the game will also open.

after reading this in the walkthrough (a normal human brain could never have come up with such a solution by itslelf) i stopped being frustrated and just went into a state of shock!

BTW some of the puzzles on the first discworld (especially the one where you actually have to give the assassin the donkey-cart's number) are tough competitors too....

I loved that puzzle (and that game, despite the number of rather unfair puzzles it included).

The worst Hitchhiker puzzle involved the space fleet that kept on getting swallowed by a small dog. Unfair and frustrating.

I liked the Monkey Kombat in Monkey Island, but I hated the final fight at the end. I thought that fight was incredibly illogical.

I never did manage to solve the map and ball puzzle in Pandora Directive (had to skip it) and the security floor puzzle in Overseer (also skipped it).

Oh yeah, never did get pass the stupid Monkey Kombat, either. One of the games I didn't finish. :(

I thought Rubacava in Grim Fandango was pretty difficult. Apart from all the figure out what to do, I had to keep running back and forth from area to area and going up to Casino Calaavera, etc...and by the end of it I was quite frustrated.

Oh, I have my fair share of them. Sometimes it's almost enough to make me wonder why I even bother with the genre at all.

There are the arcade and times sequences. Alll of them, particularly the ones that end in death. Hate them all. Even when they aren't difficult, they utterly ruin my control of the pacing of the gameplay.

Then there are the sliding puzzles and the mazes. Detestable. There's nothing to learn or discover here, just waste time moving around over and over again wishing it would end and the game would continue.

And, of course, let's not forget the ones that involve translating abstract symbols into words, letters, or numbers. Pure, pointless tedium. This isn't playing, it's bookkeeping.

However, the one puzzle I choose to single out today is the lava maze from Torin's Passage. Vile little thing that is, and utterly killed the game for me. The fact that it follows right after a timed puzzle diesn't help.

The maze isn't difficult. It's all right there on one screen. It's the movement. Tiny, tiny little steps, clicking through small spaces two or three pixels at a time, over and over again through tight little loops. Unbelievable mental frustration and physical discomfort, and knowing full well that absolutely nothing even remotely interesting will happen until it's over does not help.

And then, finally, after inching through it, it turned out that I'd missed something and had to backtracl the entire way, then off in another direction, back again, then retrace my original steps.

This was about the time I was ready to shove the disc up Al Lowe's passage.

Of course he wasn't there, so all I could do was quit the game and file it away for some other time. Maybe after finding a savegame right after that point to switch to oce I reached it.

- Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea, IMO. An archive of saves right after all of the really unpopular parts of games gathered in one convenient place could make adventuring far more pleasant.
