I chose Sierra, because I grew up with it and because it's the underdog around here :). I almost chose the Both option because of Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle, but nostalgia won over.

I chose LucasArts because of their design philosophy:

-No dead ends
-No deaths

Furthermore, I'm more a light-hearted adventure player. Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max are two of my favorite games, that should say enough.

I like LA more, may be because I played its games first, and when I played Sierra afterwards all those death nearly at every corner thing was quete annoying.

Gotta go with LucasArts. It's the classic "quality over quantity" argument. Although neither company is really impressing me these days.

I voted for Sierra.

Even though there are at LEAST six or seven Sierra adventures that are probably worse than the worst LEC adventure (which is Indy3 in my opinion)...KQ2, KQ3, KQ5, SQ2, LSL5, PQ4, QFG3, Manhunter 2, and some of the second-tier stuff.

And, even though I myself included 8 out of the 14 LucasArts adventures in my Top 20, including five in the top ten.

I think that people just don't realize HOW MANY Sierra adventures there are. It's really ridiculous. There are 7 KQ's, 6 SQ's, 5 QFG's, 6 LSL's, 4 PQ's, 3 GK's, 2 Laura Bow's, 2 Manhunter's, 2 Conquest's, 2 EcoQuest's, Willy Beamish, Rise of the Dragon, Heart of China, Freddy Pharkas, Torin's Passage, Codename Iceman, Pepper's Adventures in Time, Black Cauldron, and Gold Rush. And that doesn't include the first-person Myst-ish stuff they came out with post-Golden Age. Sierra's lineup, as a whole, touches every single emotion and desire you could ever wish for from an adventure game. There are childlike fairy tales, raunchy humor, gritty adult dramas, a Western, a spy mystery, an edutainment adventure.

I also voted for Sierra because they were the ones who were pushing the technology all the time. The King's Quest games, specifically, though being generally poor games (besides KQ6), broke tons of new ground with each installment.

The average game quality of Sierra, of course, is WAY below LucasArts, but I'd take Sierra's 14 best adventures and throw them up against LEC's 14 adventures any day. Their downfall in ability to appeal to newer adventure fans is that because they buried themselves in franchises, there aren't those great one-shot epics like Grim Fandango or Full Throttle that stand out; it's all just alphabet soup when I tell you that PQ3 was disappointing compared to SQ4 in 1991, but KQ6 was a huge leap ahead of QFG3.

I love LucasArts; I absolutely love them for what they've done for the genre, and I can't imagine being without a single one of their games. But I really believe for anyone who wants to dismiss Sierra entirely, that the more Sierra games you play, and the more you make an effort to understand the historical context and allow yourself some nostalgia, the more you'll appreciate the company as a whole.

Eh, I pretty much just voted by Sierra because I knew they'd be losing by a landslide, I guess. :)

I probably shouldn't have put that "I'm a huge fan of them both" option in the poll. LucasArts are awesome as well but I voted for Sierra. :) Probably lots of people who voted for "I'm a huge fan of them both" could flesh out both the LucasArts and Sierra number of votes if I asked them to choose a definitive favourite adventure game company. :)

Ah, the age old question. I could choose one of the two but quite frankley I couldn't be stuffed. Instead I'll just leave it at this: Both companies had thier fair share of classics.

Wow, I had no idea so many people held Sierra in such high regard as I do. I thought most people here were Lucasarts junkies. Cool.

In fact there are 6 LSL games. LSL 4 was skipped.

I loved all of LucasArts adventure games...but GK 2 alone tops everything.
GK 3 and GK 1 are great too.
They sucked me into the game that I played GK 2 without sleeping. (I forgot how many hours it took...but it was LONG - -;; )

Wrong. There were LSL 1-3, 5-7, LSL's Casino, Softporn (the text adventure that preceded the first LSL), LSL Pinball, and The Laffer Utilities. Not counting the early Hoyle Book of Games programs that featured most of the Sierra characters as playable opponents (which makes, I think, 3 more titles he's in), that's 10.( but, because most of the other Sierra characters are there alongside him, I don't. I'm pretty much sticking to titles that are distinctly Larry-esque)

Oh, and a lot of people say that The Laffer Utilities IS LSL 4, because the version no. is given as 4.0....but I believe that was intended as more of an in-joke.

Alright, there were six LSL adventures. :rolleyes: Softporn really isn't a Larry game. I'm not sure why it always gets lumped in as one. I realize it inspired Larry but it's not part of the same series.

Softporn was a Sierra game, but LSL was only loosely based on it, and it wasn't made by Al Lowe. It also features an unplayably poor parser. Those of you interested in a piece of history can get it here.

It's also included in every LSL collection that I've seen....so maybe Sierra counts it as the prologue to the graphic adventures as well. Eh. Either way, my point was just that there have been plenty of titles to feature Larry, and not all have been traditional adventures.

Loom, Indiana Jones Crusade, Indiana Jones Atlantis, Manic Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, the Dig, Full Throtle, Monkey1, Monkey2, Monkey3, Monkey 4, Grim Fandango, Zak Macraken and the Alien Mindbenders.

Some people count Labyrinth as LucasFilm Games' first adventure title, but that's kind of subjective.

Sierra also made those Phantasmagora (sp?) games. :)
