Which Single Word or Phrase Sums up Adventure Games for you?
If you had to pick one word or phrase that summed up the experience and the ethics of Adventure Games, what would it be?
For me it'd probably be "Paris in the fall" as I play AG's mainly for the narrative, this phrase just set Broken Sword up for me perfectly. or "Not Picking that Up" as the frustration of being stuck and seeing obvious solutions that won't be allowed is often a theme with most AG's. |
I can't use the skeleton arm with that
|
Hmm...I can think of many words but i'll pick "It doesn't work".
Uuhh..So frustrating!! |
Unappreciated (by most of the gaming population)

Without "Monty Python's", of course. |
If It's words then:
1.Stop clutching at straws! (inventory items not combining in Simon 2) 2. Get real George! (Nico in BS3) 3. I am at the crossroads between waking and dream (Brian from Dreamfall) 4. And last but not least the most IMPORTANT ONE! Which is: LOOK OVER THERE, A TREE HEADED MONKEY!!!!!! ;) But what about items? For example, what object/thing reminds you of adventure games? For me are: duct tape, nails, keys, VERY IMPORTANT: LONG PIECE OF ROPE:D, metal bars(sewer keys included!) ,matches, rocks......and someone else continue! :P |
"Games where you have adventures"
|
"That's not right!"
|
I think the whole essence of AG's is summed by the word "explore": collect clues, solve riddles, interact with your environment and other characters - that's what a good AG stands for.

For me there is one immortal phrase that defines all 'Adventure Games';
"A Chicken with a pulley in the middle" |
Story.
|
I can't use these two things together.
|
Narration + out of the box thinking.
|
Niche market.
|
Plots & Obstacles (like D&D)
|
Probably one of two quotes from Broken Sword 3 (I think 3?) that I kept hearing to my frustration:
"There was no way I was going to do that" "Locked!" |
Over the years I became more and more story-oriented. Well-integrated puzzles that make actually a lot of sense in the story, oh yes please. By now I've had my fill of the weird object combinations and the tired old variations of ancient stand-alone puzzles. So for me it's:
Exploration + Story + Atmosphere = Immersion :9~ |
"Stop it" When you click on your character, in I don't know which game.
I though it was pretty funny and then it always followed by "You're making me nervous" or " You're hurting me" |
"I sell these fine leather jackets"
|
Wow, there are loads of words/phrases used to describe adventure games; I wouldn't know where to begin. :P
This springs to mind, though: Picking up everything that isn't nailed down |
By far my favorite is the various hillarious comments you get from different games when you click "use" on yourself. :D
The most recent one I played was Dirty Split where his comment to that was "There will be plenty of time for that later..." :D :D :D edit: eh wait I just realized that comment had nearly nothing to do with this thread, oh well I'll just "word" what Fein said then. |

and: "Ken sent me" ;) |
Rubber Chicken with a Pulley in the Middle
and with that single Item i was eternally converted into a life of adventure games |

"Great way to kill an hour---or five or twenty!"
also: "I don't know how to (blank) the (blank) with the (blank)!" |
Let's see if anyone gets this one:
"Soon, my friend... soon." |
"You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike."
"You have entered a dark place. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." Certainly two of the most iconic phrases, anyway. |
Anything including the words "Kate Walker".
|
Probably me thinking to myself "Okay. I need to get the cracker from the drain to give to the bird to get the feather to tickle the wizard to get the key to open the desk to get the mouldy sandwich. But how do I get the cracker?"
|
^ Ha Ha Ha :D
That's how I'm made to think by games, so often! |
Does anyone remember -
"Ahh Textiles from the Shaman collection" I don't know why but every time I hear this it puts a smile on my face. :) |

'Exploration (of interesting places)' |
2 words ...Tex & Murphy
|
For me it's definitely immersion.
That's the thing I'm looking for and this expression contains other very other important elements like atmosphere, story and character development. |
Afgncaap
|
....... from the beginning of "Indy 3 Last Crusade".
|
Growing up on Sierra adventures it was always:
"Save early, save often!" :) |
