In a late reply to the point about Quake and Doom: Even if I had played them in their heyday of 'look-what-our-engine-can-do' awesomeness, I think the novelty would've worn off pretty fast. Their gameplay simply doesn't interest me and though they may have been technically impressive back then, they don't seem very interesting artistically. The same goes for Doom 3, really. For all its normal mapped polygons, it isn't beautiful like LBA is beautiful, like Grim Fandango is beautiful...
But maybe I'm just biased against subdued grey/red colour schemes...
