Its a generalization. Have you not seen any comments on what makes a game an adventure? So many of them fall in line with the general point and click formula, yet the gameplay itself is still there, which a lot of people ignore. Just like the idea that the new XCOM game isn't an XCOM game and so on. A lot of people don't give much buffer room for games defined to a genre.
