I consider The Lord of the Rings to be the best book I've ever read, and the films really nailed it (especially the extended versions).
But I can understand it's not for everyone. My girlfriend fell asleep when I tried to watch the first film with her.
Thankfully she's slowly warming up to the idea of reading the books. I'll have her start with The Hobbit.
