There's a very important item in April's inventory that she needs to show someone. If I remember correctly, doing this will trigger a seemingly unrelated action to occur elsewhere (and a new inventory item will become available).
I remember being stumped at the same place during one of my subsequent replays when I hadn't played the game for a few years.
