Yeah it would look a hell of a lot better if it was 2D backgrounds. There where a lot of games around that time that had the same mentality. Trying to do the whole 3d graphics thing but in the end they all looked and felt cold , clanky and boring.
Pre - rendered 2D hand drawn backgrounds are by far the better option in my opinion.
They have so much more life... You can express so much more detail rather than through those clunky polygons.
Perfect example - The curse of Monkey Island (3rd) had beautiful backgrounds
........ then they go and make Monkey Island 4 in 3D..... well the graphics speak
for themselves (The whole game looked shit!). It totally took away the magic that the first 3 games had. Anyway 2D background I think work better in adventure games than 3D. (although there are a few exception i'm sure)
