I refused to look at the walkthrough and I put the game on hold for a long time. Eventually consulted the walkthrough and moved on, but still haven't finished the game which I installed around 2004

That's a great example of a poorly constructed puzzle. It's not just the mechanics of the puzzle, it's how slow and drawn out it is.
