I've always found fan games, much like fan films, inexplicable. They're almost always terrible. It's like, "hey! Do you have an intense desire to output something creative but lack any sort of creativity of your own? Well boy, have I got the job for you."
But uh, don't let that stop you from drawing pictures. I'd just be wary of getting my hopes too high that I'll suddenly stumble upon an extraordinarily talented team of programmers willing to work for free with nothing but their own motivation to push themselves forward.
