IMO are rather unintuitive, and the pace of the gameplay is SLOW SLOW SLOW! Is there any way to speed things up? I know for a fact that I'm relying on the walkthrough more often than I normally would, because I don't want to try too many different methods of solving puzzles, because every command takes too long to execute. (I know how to skip lines of dialogue, but I don't know any way to speed up things like walking across the screen, performing actions, etc.)

Assuming you're playing the origina (not the director's cut) the answer is 'no, there isn't a way to speed things up'.
I like the slow pace of the game. For me, I just can't get enough of the locations and saviour every moment Stobbart is there. As Revolution were trying to make the game 'realistic' it would've seemed silling having Stobbart running left, right and centre as he's such a laid back guy.
