I would disagree, actually. There certainly are people who use excuses like religion to oppress and persecute, but the people in question genuinely believe what they're teaching. It's not just an excuse to them. I think if the poison of hatred that is fundamentalist religion (on the level it is in Iran) had never been invented in the first place, the people who now rally behind it would be nothing like what they've become through their beliefs. They might even be open-minded, reasonable people. Who knows.
