I feel the same. I never played the classic Sierra adventures, because after dying because I passed a rock on the wrong side my appetite for them was instantly lost. The Pandora Directive contains a very interesting conversation with an extremely nasty thug who works for the NSA. If you give a wrong answer, he'll kill you instantly, but it is always clear why you gave the wrong answer. That is a good example of death or dying actually enhancing the gameplay.
