I didn't think much of Ghost in the Shell, but I loved the sequel so I suggest you watch both.

Didn't like Voices of a Distant Star either, too cheesy for me, but it certainly looked nice.

Anyway, apart from what kuze said, I think Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Wings of Honneamise and Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade would be obvious choices. You might also want to check out The Cat Returns, My Neighbors the Yamadas, El Hazard - The Magnificent World, Spriggan, Steamboy and Metropolis.

My highest recommendations go to Perfect Blue (other Satoshi Kon's movies are also worth checking out) and FLCL, even though FLCL is not a movie, but a six part series.
