I find that masticating tends to ruin perfectly goos conversation opportunities. Not just when chewing gum, though. Also when you're eating a recently-purchased sandwich. It's hard enough to chew and talk simultaniously, but when the person you're talking to is trying to ignore the bolus in your mouth, and the small peices of sandwich which tend to fly out of one's mouth and stick to the other's face, well......
